BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—It was a conference championships to remember for both Rushana Dwyer and Kalen Beavers, as the pairing combined for three individual golds and Dwyer added another as a part of the women's 4x400 relay team, on the final day of competition at the Southland Conference Championships on Thursday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

"The sprinters had an amazing day," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "They killed it in almost everything they did. Coach Pennington had them ready and they did exactly what they were supposed to do. It was impressive to watch. Kalen to win the 60 and 200 was awesome to see. Rashana to win the 400 and to break the conference and school record was awesome to watch. She runs so smooth and glides. I actually saw her smile after winning so I know she did well.

"Dynia, to win the hurdles and a few minutes later run the 60 and place high is amazing. Marquise had a great day in the triple. If he doesn't bang up his knee and is able to take his last few jumps the outcome could have been different. Donroy and Ryah getting second and third in the shot put was great."

Even though NSU could not quite win its fourth indoor team title in a row, Dwyer posted one of the most impressive performances of the meet.

In the women's 400-meter dash, Dwyer posted a Southland Conference, meet and school record with a 52.88 to win the gold medal, taking it by a hair over Southeastern Louisiana's Onyah Onyinye Favour, who ran a 52.89.

She broke the conference and school record of 52.90 set by Maygan Shaw last season.

Joining her on the podium was Margaret Conteh, who ran a 53.79 to finish with the bronze.

Kahliyah Anderson ran a season-best 55.85 to place seventh.

In addition to her individual gold with a record, she also ran anchor on the women's 4x400 relay team that broke the meet record with a time of 3:40.74.

"I give all the glory to God for putting me in this position," Dwyer said. "NSU and the Southland have had so many talented 400m runners, so to be able to add my name to that history means a lot. I've trusted the process, stayed faithful and I'm grateful it showed. I also want to thank my coach Adam (Pennington) for believing in me and pushing me to be my best every day."

The women claimed third behind UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin.

On the men's side, Kalen Beavers took home a pair of golds to score 20 points for the Demons to earn the Men's MVP of the SLC Championships.

Beavers had a sensational meet, winning both the 200-meter dash and 60-meter dash for 20 points earned for the Demons. Those 20 points also earned him the SLC Men's Indoor Championships Most Valuable Player.

In the men's 60, he was a part of a Demon sweep, as he ran a 6.71 to claim gold. Joining him on the podium were Eddy Vu (6.72) with the silver and Keontae Gaines (6.75) claimed bronze.

The 60 wasn't the only time he shared the podium with Gaines, as he did so in the 200 as well. Beavers ran a 21.05 to claim the gold in the 200. Right behind him was his teammate once again, as Gaines earned the silver with a time of 21.15.

Elijah Rowe narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with a time of 21.27, and Will Achee clocked a 21.53 to place sixth.

The men's team finished second in the team standings, only behind SFA.

"It feels great to win the gold medals," Beavers said. "I am grateful God even gave me the opportunity to be able to run today and compete how I did. I also am grateful Coach Adam (Pennington) saw the potential in my brother and me and took the chance on us in the transfer portal.

"It feels great knowing he is getting return on his investment. Now it is time to take this momentum into outdoor season and stay hungry."

To start the day on the track, Dynia Lewis had a sensational run in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a gold medal with a time of 8.42 to start the day out well for the Lady Demons.

"I'm overly excited," Lewis said. "I wanted to win so bad because I got second at indoor conference last year and was coming back from an injury in outdoor conference last season and didn't even place top three in the finals.

"When I crossed the line, I didn't even check the results, I knew I won. I didn't even know what time I ran until I got on the podium. I'm blessed God chose me to win."

Lewis went straight from winning gold in the 60 hurdles to the 60-meter dash and proceeded to clock a personal-best 7.53 to place sixth.

Sileena Farrell (7.37) took home the silver and Juvonna Cornette (7.50) finished just outside the podium in fourth place.

Maria Umoibang (7.56) placed seventh to earn two points for the Lady Demons.

Cornette also earned points in the women's 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 24.24. Conteh placed sixth with a time of 24.21.

A pair of Demons made the men's 400-meter dash podium. Achee took home the silver, running a 46.67, nearly missing out on the gold, as East Texas A&M's Myles Redding ran a 46.66.

Desmond Duncan joined Achee on the podium with an indoor personal best of 47.21.

Achee and Duncan also earned a silver medal as a member of the men's 4x400 relay team that ran a 3:11.16.

In the men's 60 hurdles, Brian Fisher ran an 8.08 to place fourth, just missing the podium.

In the field, freshman Marquis Butler nearly claimed gold in the triple jump. He was ahead throughout the entire time until the final jump for SFA's Bryson Williams, who recorded a jump of 51-1.5 with his back against the wall to overtake Butler, who finished with a jump of 50-6.

Leah Brown placed fifth in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-4.25.

Victoria Byrd (36-1.5) picked up a point for the Lady Demons, finishing eighth in the triple jump, while Ciera Cammon (36-9.5) narrowly finished outside the top eight.

Over in the shot put, Donroy Brown (57-9.75) earned the silver with an indoor personal best, leading two Demons in the top eight, as La'Darion Dudley (55-5) finished fifth.

Ryah Dates took home the bronze in the women's shot put with a 8-11.75.

Eliska Zahadnickova (46-2) and Shakera Williams (43-7) also earned points for the Lady Demons, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.

"We wanted to win, obviously," Heimerman said. "We missed out on a few spots but that happens. The sprinters did amazing and led this team. We will go back to work after a small break and start the outdoor season.
