NATCHITOCHES – Three Northwestern State players did not drop a game as the Lady Demons cruised to a 7-0 victory against Alcorn on Friday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
Patrycja Polanska,
Olivia Alfredsson and
Gig Kanaphuet all won 6-0, 6-0, at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
NSU (4-3) won its second consecutive match after defeating Houston this past Sunday.
Alfredsson wasted no time making her presence felt in the match. After not playing in doubles, she came out and made quick work of Sofia Ievleva at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-0, 6-0, to put NSU in front 3-0.
Kanaphuet did the same against Barbara Cabo at No. 5, as well as Polanska at No. 4 against Tangia Riley Codrington to quickly put the Lady Demons on top 5-0. Polanska's victory clinched the match.
Alcorn (0-8) still has yet to win a point this season, being outscored 44-0.
The Braves played with just five players, meaning Alcorn had to forfeit singles No. 6 and doubles No. 3.
The afternoon began with doubles, and NSU's No. 2 team of
Judit Castillo Gargallo and
Dorota Szczygielska jumped out to an early lead and dominated throughout in a 6-1 victory to clinch the doubles point. That was the second win in as many matches for the pair. At No. 1 doubles, Polanska and
Mariella Minetti trailed 2-1 early, but rallied to pull out a 6-3 win to earn the doubles sweep.
At No. 2 singles, Szczygielska triumphed in her match, decisively defeating Stefany Grlj, 6-0, 6-1. In the second set, Szczygielska jumped ahead 2-1 and coasted from there to win going away.
Minetti clinched the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Alessandra Maganuco. Minetti fell behind in both sets early. She trailed 2-1 in the first set before grabbing the next five games to win the set and 1-0 in the second and rebounded to grab the lead quickly and outlasted Maganuco.
Castillo Gargallo won by default at No. 6, but that does not count toward her career win total, which still stands at 45.
The Lady Demons continue the homestand Saturday as they host former NSU great Tory Plunkett and Texas State. The match begins at 11 a.m. at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
