Guile's gem not enough to top Boston

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior pitcher Samantha Guile twirled a one-hit gem Friday, but Boston U. made the most of that one hit in a 1-0 win against Northwestern State on the second day of the Wooo Pig Classic.

Boston's Alex Heinen hit a solo home run in the fourth inning that was the first, and last, hit the Terriers mustered.

Guile (2-5), who rebounded from a rough outing against Arkansas on Thursday night, worked around three walks and one hit batter in her five innings with just the solo home run allowed in the NSU (8-8) loss. Guile had just one strikeout (she leads the team with 27), but she posted 10 fly ball outs in the outing.

The Bossier City native produced her fifth start this season in which she's allowed two runs or less.

"Sammie had a really good outing, it was just that one pitch for a home run," said NSU coach Donald Pickett. "One swing made the difference.
"We're not making adjustments on offense, and right now, we're not where we need to be."

But Boston U. counterpart Ali DuBois held NSU to three hits in her second shutout of the season (eighth in her career as a sophomore).

Junior Hayley Barbazon singled to lead off the game, but DuBois retired 16 straight Lady Demons.

NSU finally broke through in the sixth inning with an Elise Vincent bunt single, which Barbazon followed with a single of her own to put two runners aboard.

But DuBois steeled herself to get a ground out and fly out to end NSU's final threat with runners on base.

Barbazon, who extended her hitting streak to five games with the 2-for-3 effort, reached third base in the first inning before DuBois shut that door.

Sophomore reliever E.C. Delafield inherited a runner in the sixth inning before posting three straight outs for a scoreless relief inning.
