FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Freshman
Alexis Perry delivered three RBIs on Friday, but the runs weren't enough to dig Northwestern State out of an early hole in a 6-3 loss to Nevada.
NSU (8-9) trailed 4-1 in the sixth inning when Perry produced a two-RBI single to pull NSU within 4-3. Freshman
Casey Irvin provided the spark by drawing a two-out walk followed by a
Cayla Jones fielder's choice to put two runners on with Perry at the plate.
But the Wolf Pack added a seventh-inning run as pitcher Kendall Fritz held NSU in check for most of the day.
Fritz (2-2) struck out 10 batters and allowed three runs on just two hits and three walks. Before Irvin's sixth-inning walk, Fritz retired 14 straight Lady Demons.
Perry (2-for-3) had both of those hits, including an RBI single in the first inning as a response to Nevada's three first-inning runs.
On Perry's RBI single, Nevada actually recorded two outs to end the inning.
Kaitlyn St. Clair was out at third base and Perry was out at second base, but not before
Cayla Jones scored. Jones was hit by a pitch and St. Clair reached on an error.
"Right now, we've got too many holes in the lineup and in our approaches," said NSU coach
Donald Pickett. "We're getting out the same way too many times.
"(
Mikayla Brown) settled in after the first inning and pitched well. Nevada got a few hits and made the most of them."
NSU starter
Mikayla Brown had a rough start, giving up three first-inning runs on a pair of doubles. Ashley Salausa started the scoring with an RBI double before Kwynn Warner plated two runs on a double two batters later.
Brown (1-2) recovered to post 11 consecutive outs after ending the first inning, but NSU struggled to muster the offense to catch up.
The Deville senior allowed four runs on six hits (five doubles) and a walk in five innings.
Freshman reliever
Bronte Rhoden entered in the sixth inning after a double chased Brown and kept NSU within striking range with the next three outs.
But Nevada scored runs in the seventh inning with a Kwynn Warner RBI single with the bases loaded to go up 6-3. Nevada totaled nine hits, of which six were doubles.
Perry has 11 RBIs in the last nine games, which includes an eight-RBI week in which she won the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honor. The Wylie, Texas, native ranks second on the team with 13 RBIs this season.
