BOCA RATON, Florida -- Northwestern State women's tennis team logged four doubles matches victories Friday on the first day of the Florida Atlantic Owl Cup, an exhibition that features teams from across the country.

The Lady Demons took all three doubles matches against Stony Brook and one of three from the host Owls.

"By and large, we played well today," head coach Patric DuBois said. "However, I felt we started quite slow in a few singles matches against FAU. You just cannot do this against very good teams."

NSU won two of its three doubles matches against Stony Brook in convincing fashion.

Coming off a strong performance at Tulane, junior Judit Castillo Gargallo and her partner, fellow junior Emilija Dancetovic, won 6-2 over Stony Brook's tandem of Sasha Bekirova Elizabeth Pam. The pairing also teamed up to knock off Florida Atlantic's Natalia Boltinskaya and May Kimhi, 6-4.

In addition to Castillo Gargallo and Dancetovic winning in doubles, freshman Maria Skyba and sophomore Patrycja Polanska defeated Stony Brook's Jamie Wei and Ana Carrion-Rodriguez 6-4, while freshman Antonia Blattner and junior Ela Iwaniuk won convincingly in doubles 6-1 to complete the doubles sweep of the Seawolves.

The match between two ranked players lived up its billing, as No. 114 Skyba battled No. 88 Natalia Boltinskaya of FAU in a thrilling (6-3, 4-6, 11-9) defeat.

After winning the two doubles matches with Castillo Gargallo, Dancetovic almost finished her day with a singles win.

Dancetovic fell in a pro-set to FAU's Jacara Gillis (6-1, 5-7, 10-7). She lost the first set handily but fought back to force the decisive pro-set, dropping a close set to lose the match.

"Saturday we'll have a round of doubles matches and two rounds of singles," DuBois said. "I expect to be locked in from the beginning."

Northwestern State returns to the court tomorrow for the second day of the Florida Atlantic Owl Cup.

The Lady Demons' next dual match is Feb. 2 against UL Lafayette at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex.
