Visiting ACU, Lady Demons try to stay alone atop Southland standing

ABILENE, Texas —Leading the Southland Conference as the only undefeated league team with a 7-0 record, the sizzling Northwestern State women's tennis team has four league matches left in its push for the regular season championship title.

Winning 10 of their past 11 matches, the Lady Demons (11-5 overall) anticipate a tough match at Abilene Christian Friday at 11 a.m. at the Eager Tennis Center.

"It's always a tough match against Abilene Christian, especially when we go out there to play," head coach Patric DuBois said. "They're a very good tennis team. We always have to play very well to not only compete with them, but to defeat them. It's going to be no different this year."

The Wildcats (10-7, 4-3) have consistently been solid opponents for NSU since joining the conference in 2013. Though the Lady Demons have captured four of their five meetings, almost all have been by tight margins.

In its 2016 season, NSU's only loss to ACU started as a 2-2 tie that was ultimately broken by two three-set singles matches for a 4-2 Wildcat triumph. Last year, the Lady Demons prevailed 6-1.

Sitting in the No. 6 slot in the Southland Conference standings, each match is a fight by ACU to ensure a spot in the six-team league tournament. The Lady Demons believe the elements that have gotten them to this point are the key for Friday's match.

"We've been consistent in grinding away," DuBois said. "We're doing the best we can to stay in every point.

"We need to be totally focused, very intense and bring a lot of energy into this match from every position in order to have a good chance to win."

Earning a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win at last week's SFA match, senior Polina Ivanova improved her overall NSU singles record to 50-25 which tied her for 11th place on the list of most singles wins in Lady Demon tennis history. Friday's match is an opportunity for Ivanova to be in the top ten.

Posting a 9-2 overall singles record, sophomore Judit Castillo leads the Lady Demons in singles primarily at No. 5. Leading in doubles is No. 3 partnership Emilija Dancetovic and Ela Iwaniuk with a 5-0 overall record.

The current seven-match winning streak is near an overall string of nine straight victories last season. It is the longest set of consecutive Southland regular-season wins for the program since nine in a row in 2014.

Should NSU post an all-win final league record, it'll be the first unconquered season the program has seen since 2010.

After Friday's match, the Lady Demons will return home for a pair of 11 a.m. contests against two-time defending conference champion Texas A&M Corpus Christi next Saturday (April 7) and UIW on next Sunday.
