DALLAS, Texas—Northwestern State put up some fight on three singles courts Monday evening, but SMU overwhelmed the Lady Demons 6-1 in women's collegiate tennis.
 
SMU (4-3) decisively swept all three matches to score the doubles point over NSU (1-4). The Lady Demons got their only match victory in the No. 1 singles position, as Polina Mutel prevailed 6-1, 7-5 over Sarai Monarrez Yesaki.
 
The Mustangs were dominant earning the doubles point.
 
"SMU did a good job coming out of the gates in doubles," head coach Patric DuBois said. "They put us on our heels quickly."
 
While Mutel's triumph was NSU's only point, Polina Ivanova at No. 2 and Judit Castillo in the sixth position were very competitive.
 
Ivanova split sets with Anzhelika Shapovalova, who then prevailed in a pro set to post a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (4) triumph.
 
Castillo rebounded from a 6-1 first-set loss and narrowly fell 7-5 in the second set.
 
Stiff opposition overcame Kateryna Avram and Ela Iwaniuk as SMU scored the first two singles points in the No. 5 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Emilija Dancetovic retired late in the second set in her No. 4 singles match.
 
"We played better in singles, but SMU was the better team today," said DuBois.
 
For SMU, the win over NSU was its second of the day, after beating Collin College, the ITA'S 12th-ranked junior college program, 7-0.
 
The Lady Demons will travel to Louisiana Tech on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech at noon and Grambling at 2:30 p.m.
