NEW ORLEANS – Despite two Northwestern State tennis players leading in second sets of singles play, Tulane clinched the necessary three points for a 4-0 victory Sunday.
Polina Ivanova and
Kateryna Avram each led their second sets 4-3 after dropping first sets for NSU (0-2), but Tulane (1-0) won two singles matches and earned a point from a forfeit.
Ivanova (No. 2 slot) matched up against Tulane's Lauren Fabrizi, who won the first set 6-2. Tulane's Elena Muller took the first set from Avram 6-1 in the No. 4 position.
In the top slot, NSU's
Polina Mutel scored the first two points against Tulane's Sade Atkinson before falling 6-4, (2-0 second set).
Tulane's Ivone Alario (No. 3) and Christina Sisti (No. 5) scored singles points against
Ela Iwaniuk (6-0, 6-3) and Emilija Dancetovich (6-2, 6-1).
In doubles play, Tulane's Atkinson/Muller topped Ivanova/Mutel 6-0 to clinch doubles play after a forfeit.
Because of an injury, NSU didn't field a third doubles team or a sixth singles player.
NSU, which starts the season with its first seven matches on the road, will return to action at UL Lafayette on Jan. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
