Lady Demons tennis excited to compete in front of home crowd

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State tennis team's home opener is Thursday against UL Lafayette after playing three road matches to open the 2017 portion of dual play.

The Ragin Cajuns (1-1) come to town on the heels of a 6-1 loss at the hands of South Alabama.

Third-year head coach Olga Bazhanova is hoping returning home gives the Lady Demons (0-3) an added motivation as the team is still on the hunt for its first win of the young season.

"We are very excited to play at home this week, Bazhanova said. "The girls have been working hard and looking forward to getting to compete at home. It's always exciting to play at home to have all the support from our wonderful community"

Returners junior Polina Ivanova, and sophomores Iryna Vardanian and Polina Mutel, lead the way for the Lady Demons, playing in the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles positions respectively.

Vardanian moved to 1-1 in singles play and recorded the first point for the Lady Demons of the season as the team was able to avoid a sweep against SMU a weekend ago.

Three Eastern European freshmen, Kateryna Avram, Emilija Dancetovic and Vladislava Litvinova fill out the remaining starting six.

Northwestern State will play three matches this week, first against ULL, followed by Southern Mississippi Saturday at 11 a.m. and Louisiana Tech Sunday at 2 p.m.

"We have three very competitive matches and we have to play well and stick with the right process to be successful," Bazhanova said.

The match on Thursday versus ULL will begin at 12:30 at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex and the first fans to arrive will receive free Taco Bell – limited quantity is available.
