SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Northwestern State women's tennis team travels west this weekend with two matchups against former Southland Conference foes.
The Lady Demons (3-3) went a perfect 3-0 this past weekend, picking up wins against UL Lafayette, Southern Mississippi and Louisiana Tech.
Freshman
Emilija Dancetovic brought home the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award for her strong play over the course of the three game home stand.
The Lipljan, Serbia native went 3-0 in the No. 2 doubles position with junior
Polina Ivanova and 1-1 in the No. 4 singles position. She clinched the match point against Southern Miss and the doubles point against both USM and ULL.
Sophomore
Iryna Vardanian has been the strongest singles competitor for the Lady Demons thus far in 2017. She carries a four-match winning streak into the weekend. Â
First up for the Lady Demons (3-3) is Texas State (2-0) on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Bobcats are 1-0 against current SLC members, with three more scheduled before conference play begins. Texas State hosts Stephen F. Austin on Friday afternoon.
NSU will turn around to play Texas San Antonio (3-1) on Sunday, also at 11 a.m. The Road Runners play SFA on Saturday at home.
"We are looking forward to this weekend," head coach
Olga Bazhanova said. "Both teams are strong and they are going to give us tough competition."
Northwestern State opens its conference schedule next weekend with another road trip to Texas to face Sam Houston State and Lamar.
"We are constantly working on the team process and understanding the importance of staying focused in practice and in the matches," Bazhanova said. "We have to keep trusting ourselves, stick with the process, be brave and stay tough."
