NATCHITOCHES – Nearly a month following honors for their supremacy on the court,
Reagan Rogers and
Channing Burleson have been recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom.
Northwestern State volleyball's offensive and defensive duo were both named first-team Academic All-Southland Conference – after being tabbed for first-team all-conference honors in mid-November – the league announced Monday.
Burleson, the Southland's Libero of the Year, repeated as a conference all-academic selection as she named to the academic second-team a season ago. Rogers, NSU's top outside hitter, earned her first academic honor as a member of the 12-member first team that was led by Student-Athlete of the Year Samantha Anderson of Central Arkansas.
"As much as Channing and Reagan commit themselves to be the best they can be on the court, they also have that commitment to the classroom, and this is a deserved recognition," third-year head coach
Sean Kiracofe said. "As a program, we hold all of our student athletes to a high standard academically and Reagan and Channing are exceptional role models for what can be accomplished on and off the court.
Rogers, the conference's leader in kills, aces and points, maintained a 3.73 GPA in hospitality management, while putting together one of the top seasons in Lady Demons history. Her 427 kills and 1,354 attempts each rank second all-time in NSU single-season history.
Burleson, a nursing major holding a 3.8 GPA, dominated defensively this season, digging 5.5 attacks per set in conference play – most in the league. Burleson has been the model of consistency in her two seasons as a libero. Her 573 total digs this season place her third all-time in NSU single-season history, one more than her fourth-ranked mark of 572 set last season.
Rogers' and Burleson's selections are the Lady Demons' ninth and 10
th Academic All-Southland Conference honors in the past four seasons.
