UNO uses 51 kills to upend Demons

NSU falls to UNO in three sets

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of New Orleans Privateers had 51 kills in a straight set win over the Northwestern State Demons' volleyball team (25-11, 25-18 and 25-9) Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.

The Demons (1-19, 0-6 SLC) fell behind early in the first set as UNO (7-12, 2-4 SLC) had an 11-4 lead before NSU called a timeout. The Demons mounted a mini rally as they trimmed the hole to 14-9 before the Privateers ran away with the frame. Olivia Bush had three kills for the Demons in the opening set while Deja Benjamin added two.

In the second set, the Demons competed well early on. Junior Jade Longlad added to her conference lead with her 35th ace to pull the Demons within one, 5-4. NSU hung tough for much of the set as they trailed 18-15 following a block by Benjamin. However, the Privateers won seven of the next 10 points to clinch the set and take a 2-0 lead.

In the final set, the Privateers stormed out to a 12-0 lead on eight kills before Emmarie McFarland's kill ended the 12-point run. But UNO never stopped as they went on to take the set emphatically.

NSU finished with 26 kills led by Bush and McFarland with seven kills each. Reagan Hamm had 13 assists while Longlad added 12.

"Olivia had a great day," said Demon head coach Ben Kaszeta. "Her and Samaya went to battle. But we simply had no answer to the UNO offense today. They kept us pretty off balance all match long."

UNO had 51 kills and just five errors. Alessandra Meoni and Laura Piva had 13 kills to lead the way while Courtney Roundtree had 12. Meoni finished with a double-double as she also had 11 digs.

Next up, the Demons return home Thursday night to face the McNeese Cowgirls at 6:30 p.m. in Prather Coliseum.
