NATCHITOCHES --  Polina Mutel posted a pair of singles wins Saturday in the third position for Northwestern State as the Lady Demons picked up their first win of the season, 4-0 over Alcorn State, after falling 5-2 in a morning meeting with Texas State at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
 
Mutel won 6-0, 6-3 in the afternoon against Alcorn's Ekaterina Potapova, and 6-3, 7-6 against Texas State's Katy Collins.  
 
The Lady Demons (1-6) posted a pair of 6-0 wins to take the doubles point over Alcorn (0-8). Natalya Krutova and Polina Ivanova won at No. 1 and Alzbeta Veverkova and Barbora Kollarova rolled at No. 3.
 
Iryna Vardanian rolled 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles over Ivana Boberic of Alcorn to move NSU up 2-0, then Mutel posted her win and Kollarova provided the finisher with a 6-2, 6-0 rout at No. 6 over Laura Arruda.
 
In the morning match, Texas State (3-5) captured the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 3, and moved ahead 3-0 with a fourth-slot singles victory by Yadira Rubio over NSU's Ilijana Ivic 6-2, 6-3 followed by a No. 2 triumph from Pippa Carr, 6-3, 6-0 over Vardanian. The Lady Demons battled back to within 3-2 with wins by Ivanova at No. 6 (7-5, 6-3 over Ana Perez) and Mutel.
 
But the Bobcats closed it out when Joy Chia Ming Ming outlasted Veverkova 7-5, 6-3.
