DENTON, Texas – Outstanding doubles play set the tone, then the top of the singles lineup came through Saturday as Northwestern State handed new coach
Olga Bazhanova her first career victory with a 4-3 triumph at North Texas.
The Lady Demons (1-3), the reigning Southland Conference champions, beat a North Texas team (2-7) that had just fallen out of the national rankings after four defeats to ranked opponents.
"It was a very good match on both sides. North Texas competed very well at every position. We played very good in doubles and used this momentum in singles. We played aggressive and consistent tennis today," said Bazhanova.
Tatiana Larina and
Natalya Krutova contributed two points of NSU's scoring, winning their doubles matches convincingly and pulling off hard-fought singles wins atop the lineup. They rolled 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles, then Krutova was a 6-4, 6-4 victor in the second singles slot while
Larina pulled off a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 triumph in the No. 1 match.
Aliona Ladutska and
Barbora Kollarova gave the Lady Demons the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
The other singles point for NSU was by
Polina Ivanova at No. 5 by a 6-4, 6-1 margin.
