Box Score 2 NATCHITOCHES –
Cheyenne DelaGarza's two-run homer and
Brittany Virgoe's two-run RBI shot to right field secured two shutouts and the sweep for the Northwestern State softball team over Houston Baptist with scores of 2-0 and 4-0 in Southland Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Lady Demon Diamond.
The Lady Demons improved to 33-10 overall, 14-5 in the Southland, posting head coach
Donald Pickett's best record of his career, while the Huskies fell to 13-21, 6-14 in league play.
DelaGarza's second inning, two-run homer over the center field wall gave NSU the edge in game one.
The Weathorford, Texas, product stepped up after a single up the middle by
Cali Burke to notch her third home run of the season.
In the sixth inning of game two,
Jordan Palmer,
Shenequia Abby and
Tara McKenney all picked up singles to load the bases and bring up Virgoe. The Anaheim, Calif, native ripped a two-run double to the right field wall, putting the Lady Demons up 4-0.
NSU got on the board in the third as
Brianna Rodriguez notched her 15
th double of the season to score McKenney.
Cali Burke picked up a RBI in the fifth with a single to shortstop Danielle Rodarte, sending pinch runner
Tashana Triplett home.
HBU's Kirsten Schwirtlich laid down a bunt in the top of the seventh to pick up the Huskies' only hit of the game against junior transfer
Kaylee Guidry (10-3).
Guidry grabbed the shutout and struck out six of the 22 batters she faced after relieving
Brooke Boening in the first.
Following DelaGarza's homer in the second, the Huskies threatened the Lady Demons by putting runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, but were unable to cross the plate.
Senior
Kylie Roos (12-3) also picked up a shutout and threw a complete game, striking out nine and allowing five hits.
Virgoe led from the plate going three-for-seven with two RBI followed by DelaGarza posting a one-for-five attempt and two RBI, Burke sporting a five-for-seven mark and one RBI and Rodriguez going three-for-five with one RBI.
“It was a total team effort today,” said Pickett. “The entire team pulled together in times of need to put runs on the board and to lift each other up when it was necessary.”
The Lady Demons will host Houston Baptist on Sunday for the series finale beginning at one o'clock.
