Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Back-to-back home runs by
Cassandra Barefield led to a 5-1 victory over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi for the Northwestern State softball team Sunday afternoon.
“It felt great to get the win and the series sweep overall,” said head coach
Donald Pickett. “We're really proud of Cassandra and her success at the plate so far this season. “
The Lady Demons improve to 24-6 overall, 5-3 in the Southland Conference while the Islanders fall to 6-24 overall, 1-8 in the SLC.
Barefield picked up her eighth and ninth home runs of the season, surpassing the total number of homers she posted last season (8).
In the third,
Tara McKenney and
Brianna Rodriguez got on base as Barefield stepped up to crack her first homer of the day over the left field wall, putting the Lady Demons up 3-0.
NSU put two more on the board in the fifth as Rodriguez walked, bringing up Barefield once again. Barefield ripped another home run over the left field wall, picking up her fourth and fifth RBIs of the day.
The Islanders were able to grab one run in the fourth, but were rendered scoreless throughout the rest of the game.
Senior
Brooke Boening (7-4) threw a complete game to pick up her seventh win of the season as she posts her best record of her career.
Boening struck out seven and allowed just three hits.
Barefield led from the plate as she went two-for-four and picked up five RBI, followed by DelaGarza grabbing two hits on three at-bats.
The Lady Demons will travel to Louisiana Tech on Wednesday for a five o'clock start time. NSU returns home on Friday to host Lamar in a three game Southland Conference series, beginning at 4:00.
