Home runs propel Lady Demons to victory over Jackson State

NATCHITOCHES – Back-to-back home runs by Brianna Rodriguez and Cassandra Barefield propelled the Northwestern State softball team to a 3-0 victory over Jackson State Wednesday evening at the Lady Demon Diamond.

“Games with Jackson State are always interesting,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “They're a good team and they give us a run for our money. “

Rodriguez led off the second inning with a hard shot over the left field wall, followed by Barefield cranking a homer to center field to put the Lady Demons up 2-0.

Rodriguez picked up her fourth home run of the season, while Barefield grabbed her seventh.

In the fifth, Shenequia Abby singled to second base to get a runner on, andstole second on the first pitch of Tara McKenney's at-bat. McKenney sent one to right field, sending Abby home for the third and final run of the game.

Senior Kylie Roos (7-1) held the Lady Tigers scoreless as she threw a complete game, allowing just two hits and striking out 10, while facing 25 batters.

Rodriguez led from the plate going two-for-three and grabbing one RBI. Barefield and McKenney each went one-for-three with one RBI.

The Lady Demons return to Southland Conference play on Saturday as they travel to Texas A&M Corpus Christi for a three game series beginning at one o'clock.
