NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State women's tennis team notched four singles wins to overpower Arkansas State 5-2 on Saturday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
 
The Lady Demons improve to 4-3 on the season while the Red Wolves drop to 2-4.
 
“This was a very good college match and a solid win for us,” said Lady Demon head coach Patric DuBois.
 
NSU captured wins in all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and go up 1-0 at the start of the day.
 
Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova teamed up to take down ASU's Iona Teu and Janie Nowland 8-6 at the No. 1 position. Polina Konop and Natalya Krutova won 8-0 in the No. 2 spot and Amy Williams and Daniela Simonova went 8-4 in the third position.
 
“We had a very good start with all three doubles teams playing at a high level,” said DuBois. “The momentum carried over and we played solid, smart tennis in singles. Both teams were evenly matched so we had to play at a high level to win today.”
 
Larina grabbed the first singles win of the day, taking down Nowland 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
 
Olga Leyshyna triumphed over Chiara Stefanov 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 position and freshman Daniela Simonova defeated Jess Heeps-Eriksen 6-3, 7-5 in the sixth spot.
 
Nedorostova registered NSU's final win of the day, overpowering Teu 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 in a three-set nail-biter at the No. 4 position.
 
Konop and Krutova each lost in three-set battles at the No. 1 and 3 positions, respectively.
 
The Lady Demons travel to Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday to take on the Ragin' Cajuns. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Cajun Courts.
