NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State softball team suffered its first loss after a 10 game win streak as they fell to Louisiana Tech 4-3 in the second day of the Natchitoches Historic Development District Commission Lady Demon Classic. NSU defeated Alcorn State 10-3 earlier in the day to earn the 10th win.
“We had a really good day offensively, but overall we have some work to do,” said head coach Donald Pickett.
The Lady Demons notched 13 RBI on 22 hits throughout the day as Brianna Rodriguez homered twice while Brittany Virgoe, Natalie Landry, and Cassandra Barefield had one homer a piece.
NSU consistently picked up single runs throughout the contest with La Tech, but a big fifth inning by the Lady Techsters left the Lady Demons down by one and unable to score in the seventh.
Kaylee Guidry (4-1) came in for Brooke Boening (5-2) in the second inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Against the Lady Tigers, NSU picked up runs in almost every inning, including homers by Virgoe and Landry in the sixth.
The Lady Demons put three on the board in the first with Rodriguez's first homer of the day as she picked up three RBI on the hit.
NSU picked up three more scores in the second and cooled down in the third for a scoreless inning.
Alcorn grabbed two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth, but the Lady Demons would not allow any more.
Baylee Gray (2-0) earned her second career victory as she threw six complete innings striking out seven and allowing six hits.
Paige Cavallin (1-0) thew the seventh and final inning, striking out one batter.
Rodriguez lead the Lady Demons from the plate with four hits and five RBI, followed by Virgoe with three hits and three RBI and Landry with four hits and two RBI.
The Lady Demons will be back on the field on Sunday when they face Louisiana Tech once again in the final day of the Natchitoches Historic Development District Commission Lady Demon Classic. The first pitch is slated for 12:30.
