NATCHITOCHES – Cassandra Barefield and Brittany Virgoe's homeruns propelled the Northwestern State softball team into victories over Louisiana-Monroe and Alcorn State Friday afternoon at the Natchitoches Historic Development Commission Lady Demon Classic. The Lady Demons defeated the Warhawks and the Lady Tigers 4-2 and 8-0, respectively.

“We had a good day today,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “This tournament is full of competitive teams.”

The Lady Demons improved to 15-2 on the day as ULM and Alcorn State fell to 7-8 and 1-9, respectively.

Barefield's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth sealed the win for NSU, giving them four runs total and an unanswerable ULM team throughout the rest of the game.

The Lady Demons grabbed two runs in the opening inning in order to get on the board, followed by the Warhawks following in NSU's footsteps with two runs themselves.

Senior Brooke Boening (4-1) earned the win throwing five complete innings, striking out seven and allowing just three hits. Kaylee Guidry opened the game with two innings from the circle as she allowed two hits and struck out one.

In the third, Virgoe bounced one off the tip of the center field wall to notch her second homer of the season, aiding in the shutout over the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Demons tacked on four runs as they loaded the bases in the fourth. Virgoe stepped up and doubled up the middle for two RBI, followed by Cali Burke and Brianna Rodriguez grabbing one RBI a piece for two more runs.

Senior Kylie Roos (4-0) threw a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out 12 of 19 batters.

Virgoe and Barefield picked up three hits and three RBI on the day, while Rodriguez sat just behind with two hits and two RBI.

The Lady Demons continue play on Saturday as they face Alcorn and Louisiana Tech at 12:30 and three o'clock at the Lady Demon Diamond.
