CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas  – The Northwestern State women's basketball team took their first conference road win on the backs of Keisha Lee's 16 first half points and Jasmine Upchurch's 13 second half points when it beat Texas A&M- Corpus Christi 68-58 Tuesday night in Southland Conference action.

Lee finished the game with 21 and Upchurch had 19 points to run NSU's record to 10-15 overall and 6-9 in SLC action. Jasmine Bradley added 16 points to the effort along with Janelle Perez's 10 points.

“Anytime we can get balance like that, it really takes the focus off one or two and that really alleviates some of the pressure that our top scorers feel,” said co-head coach Brooke Stoehr. “I think anytime we have that kind of balance we'll be tough to beat.”

Jessica Jammer was Corpus Christi's (3-22, 2-12 SLC) only player in double-figures with 16 points.

The Lady Demons hit 50 percent of their shots for the game, including a 6-for-8 mark from behind the 3-point line. NSU scored 41 points in the first half alone on 15-of-26 shooting for 58 percent.

“Anytime you shoot the basketball 58 percent you're doing some good things,” said Stoehr. “It started with our attack mentality and shot selection. We really looked for layups and free throws, and then for open jumpers in that order.

“I felt like we did that,” she said. “We valued the ball too, and anytime you do that and get good looks at the basket you have a chance to really score.”

Northwestern State finished the game with 13 turnovers, including only five turnovers in the first half. The Lady Demons forced the Islanders into 21 turnovers and were able to score 22 points from the miscues.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to a five point lead at the 17:32 mark in the first half, but NSU worked its way back to take the lead with 15:`17 to play in the opening half. The Lady Demons would not give up the lead again.

By halftime, NSU built a 12 point lead, and that swelled to the largest lead of the day at 16 by the 13:23 in the second half. Sixteen points is the largest lead NSU has held this season.

The Islanders cut the lead to single-digits with 1:05 to play, but two free throws made by Arianne Ausmer with 45 seconds froze the game to its final score.

Jasmine Bradley led the team in assists and rebounds with six apiece.

Corpus Christi's Brandi Huff was the game's leader in rebounds with seven. The Islanders led NSU in rebounds 35 to 25 including 18 offensive boards Corpus Christi grabbed.

Northwestern State will take a break from conference play on Saturday when they take on New Orleans at noon in Prather Coliseum.
