UTSA Game Notes
WACO, Texas – On two-game winning streak, the Northwestern State women's basketball team, led by Southland Conference player of the week
Keisha Lee, will travel Baylor on Thursday to take part in the Athletes in Action Classic for three games in three days.
NSU (2-0) will open the tournament with former Southland Conference member Texas-San Antonio (1-2) at 5:00 on Thursday. That game will be carried on the radio at 97.5 KDBH in Natchitoches.
"When we look at doing these multi-team event, we have a couple of things in mind," said second-year co-head coach
Brooke Stoehr. "One, we wanted to prepare our team. When you get to and play in the conference tournament, you may have to play three games in three days.
"Second, it's a chance to play two games on a neutral court," she said. "They are games that we feel like we'll be very competitive in and I think that is exciting for our team."
NSU will play No. 9 Baylor (3-0) on Friday night at 7 o'clock and the final game for the Lady Demons will be against Savannah State (2-0) at 7 o'clock on Saturday.
NSU's game on Friday night will be KDBH and Saturday's game will be on 100.7 KZBL in Natchitoches.
Lee was voted league player of the week the office announced on Monday after her career-high 28 points against Houston.
"Keisha just looks really confident out there on the floor," said Stoehr. "I think having a year in our offensive system has been very beneficial for her, and she understands what we are trying to do."
She leads the Lady Demons in scoring average with 23 points per game, followed by
Trudy Armstead who has 20. Armstead (10.0 pg) and Lee (7.0 pg) also lead the team in rebounds.
Janelle Perez leads Northwestern State in assists with six per game.
"Our first game is going to be a tough one against UTSA," said Stoehr. "They have a couple of players in the backcourt players that are pretty experienced and good scorers for them.
"Baylor is a top ten team, and we know what we're going to get with them," she said. "It's a different look for them this year because the lost a lot of experience, a lot of length on the perimeter and Brittney Griner. They do still have Odyssey Sims who is arguably the best point guard in the country, and she makes them go.
"Savannah State is another team that likes to put up a lot of points and a lot of shots," she said. "They average a good number of points."
After the tournament, the Lady Demons will be off until Dec. 2 when they return home to face Jackson State.
