Williams' unbeaten weekend capped by exciting win as Lady Demons cruise

THIBODAUX – Freshman Amy Williams pulled out a 10-8 pro set victory in the No. 5 singles match Sunday to wrap up Northwestern State's 6-1 triumph at Nicholls State as the Lady Demons wrapped up their regular season in Southland Conference women's tennis.

Northwestern raised its record to 14-4 overall, finishing 8-3 in the Southland standings. Nicholls slipped to 8-12 overall, 2-8 in Southland play.

Williams prevailed 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 over Catherine Gauthier of Nicholls to complete an undefeated weekend for the Leesville freshman, who swept singles and doubles matches Saturday at Southeastern. Sunday in doubles play, she and freshman Linda Gamo (also unbeaten on the weekend) won in a walkover by default at the No. 3 position.

Freshman Tatiana Larina rolled 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while junior Andrea Nedorostova recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4. They teamed for an 8-1 decision in the No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Polina Konop gave NSU another point with a 3-0, retired, outcome when her opponent, Janna Leeuwerik, could not continue due to injury in the No. 3 singles. Gamo won by default at No. 6.

“We did a very good job today of staying on task in every match against an undermanned Nicholls team,” said NSU coach Patric DuBois. “They were very solid at every position. We fortunately had a free win at No. 6 today, but it's also very easy to lose focus in a situation like this, when you go in knowing your team is picking up an uncontested point. Our girls did a great job of staying focused on their individual matches.”

Parija Maloo topped Olga Bazhanova 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles for the only point for the Lady Colonels.

“We played well and I think this is good momentum leading us into the Southland Conference Championships in Nacogodoches (Texas) in two weeks,” said DuBois.

Seedings for the conference tournament will be finalized once rained-out matches are made up in the coming days.

Northwestern has posted 14 wins or better in five straight seasons for the first time in school history.
