NATCHITOCHES – Finishing 3-1 at the NSU Lady Demon Invitational, the softball team fell to UL-Monroe 8-3 and defeated Southern 4-0 to become co-tournament champions on Sunday at the Lady Demon Complex.
Brianna Rodriguez crushed a solo home run for NSU (8-13) against ULM (11-7) and ripped a double against SU (3-11) to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She finished the tournament with two homers, five runs scored, a .545 batting average, .615 on base percentage and a 1.162 slugging percentage.
Kylie Roos (2-7) tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout while striking out 10 to secure the win over the Jaguars. Kelee Grimes (4-5) took the loss against the Warhawks, despite striking out 11 and allowing just one earned run in 5.1 innings.
The Lady Demons scored twice in the second and third innings against SU to get on top. Cheyenne DeLaGarza's RBI double in the second got it going, and back-to-back doubles by Rodriguez and Cassandra Barefield in the third did most of the damage.
DeLaGarza, Blair Beard and Brittany Virgoe all knocked two hits in the win, including a RBI single to centerfield by Beard to cap off the third inning. It was Beard's sixth multi-hit game of the season, and the first for DeLaGarza and Virgoe.
Barefield blasted a two-run homer in the first inning against ULM, while Tara McKenney and Cali Burke each registered a pair of hits. Though, NSU couldn't muster enough runs across the plate despite outhitting the Warhawks 8-7.
ULM led 4-2 in the seventh inning when it broke the game open with four runs on five hits and an error. Haylie Wilson (5-1) earned the win for the Warhawks, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Brooke Boening pitched 1.2 innings of relief against ULM, striking out a pair.
ULM also finished 3-1 at the NSU Lady Demon Invitational to split the tournament championship with NSU.
The Lady Demons have won five of their last six games, and will give Southern a two-game rematch on Wednesday when they travel to Baton Rouge for a doubleheader starting at 1.
