NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State softball team dropped a 2-1 decision on Saturday when McNeese State's Ashley Modzelewski hit a seventh-inning solo home run to give the Cowgirls the edge at the Lady Demon Diamond Complex.

The Lady Demons (12-18, 1-3 SLC) scored in the second inning on a RBI single by Jordan Palmer. The inning started when Cali Burke singled up the middle and advanced to second on Cassandra Barefield's walk. After both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Virgoe, Palmer roped a two-out hit to leftfield to score Burke.

“We were really happy to see the bottom of the lineup come through for us. Jordan has worked hard all season and has kept a good attitude about not getting to play as much as she wants to. She definitely stepped up with that two-out hit today to get us on the board,” said head coach Donald Pickett.

Both teams registered six hits and neither committed an error. Burke also singled up the middle in the fourth inning to notch her sixth multi-hit game of the season.

Tiffany Denham (7-2) picked up the win for McNeese State (19-8, 4-0 SLC) after pitching a complete-game and allowed just one run. Kylie Roos (4-9) also threw a complete-game, but recorded the loss after firing four strikeouts.

The Cowgirls scored their first run of the game on a solo home run to leftfield by Kim Kennedy in the second inning.

“McNeese is a very good team and we know we can play with any team in the conference, but we just didn't get the timely hits today,” Pickett said. “We have to be consistent with our execution and continue playing hard every day.”

NSU will be back in action on Tuesday with a conference doubleheader on the road at Central Arkansas starting at 4.
