MONROE – The Northwestern State softball team let up an early surge Saturday morning and just couldn't recover, as it dropped its second game of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic to the host team, UL-Monroe, 10-0 in six innings.

NSU slipped to 0-2 on the season after a tough walk-off loss Friday night. ULM improved to 2-1, as Samantha Hamby (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout and earned the win.

Roos (0-2) started the game for the Lady Demons on the mound, and Brooke Boening and Sara Aasness each pitched three innings of relief. Boening let up just one earned run and struck out 11 batters.

Brittany Virgoe and Cali Burke each registered a hit for the second straight game to highlight the NSU offense. They both reached base twice in the game, as Virgoe was also hit by a pitch and Burke drew a walk.

ULM took control early after a single, double, triple, two walks and two passed balls in the first inning made it 6-0.

The Lady Demons had their best chance to score in the third inning when Burke and Roos both walked, and Samantha Roberts reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Though, Hamby was able to escape untouched after a big strikeout and a groundout to third-base.

The Warhawks tacked on four more runs in the top of sixth inning, and held the Lady Demons scoreless in the bottom half to end the game.

NSU will be back in action Saturday night to take on IUPUI at 5 p.m. as part of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe.
