NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State's senior superstar, Trecey Rew, added two more awards Thursday when she was announced as the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year along with earning Field Event Athlete of the Year honors.

The accolades were voted on by conference head coaches and sports information personnel, based primarily on performances at last weekend's Southland Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by NSU at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex.

Rew won the discus title last Friday, repeating as champion with the nation's ninth-best throw this season, a Southland Conference and school record 180-1 mark that was an inch better than the winning men's discus throw. It broke her own conference record.

Saturday, she was upset in her bid to defend her shot put title, finishing second. But Sunday, she came through with her best-ever hammer throw (174-4) and finished as the runner-up, one slot higher than she was seeded.

Rew repeated as the high point scorer with 26 points (same as last year), leading the Lady Demons to the all-time best conference finish, second, in the program's 26-year history.

She won eight career Southland titles: the indoor shot put crowns in 2008, 2010 and 2011, the indoor weight throw in 2011, and outdoors, the 2008, 2010 and 2011 discus titles, and the 2010 shot put gold medal.

She won 2010 All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a ninth place finish last year in the shot put. She owns the second-best mark in conference history, 54-11 1/2, last season.

She was the 2010 NCAA East Region discus champion with the previous SLC all-time best throw of 179-0.

Her 2011 bests rank her 9th nationally in the discus (180-1) and 20th in the shot (54-1 1/4). Rew will be among a dozen NSU competitors lining up next weekend in the NCAA East Region Championships hosted by Indiana, with top finishers there advancing to next month's NCAA Championships at Oregon.

The Garland, Texas native graduated with a 3.86 grade point average last year in journalism, and has a 4.0 GPA through two semesters in the sport administration master's degree program at NSU.

Rew was the 2010 SLC Outdoor and 2011 SLC Indoor Field Event Athlete of the Year, and the 2011 SLC Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year. She is a nominee for Academic All-America.

Texas-Arlington sprinter Cordero Gray won the male Athlete of the Year award announced Thursday. Gray, who was also voted the men's outstanding track performer, won both the 100 meter (10.12) and 200 (20.56) and tied with Stephen F. Austin's Xavier Rodriguez as the men's high point scorer with 22 points. His 10.12 mark in the 100 is currently seventh-best in the nation. It was the second time in Gray's career that he was the high-point scorer of the outdoor championships, having also accomplished the feat in 2009 with 22.5 points.

The men's freshman of the year is UTSA's Keyunta Hayes, who won the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.25. His performance came on the heels of a third-place effort in the 110m hurdles. Hayes was also the anchor leg on the men's 400m relay team and finished with 16.75 points, which was tops among all freshmen.

UTA sophomore Romain Martin was named the men's newcomer of the year after winning the decathlon with 7,556 points. It was the highest point total since 2002 at the SLC Outdoors.

Stephen F. Austin's Phil Olson earned coach of the year honors for both men and women after sweeping the respective championships. It was Olson's third consecutive women's coach of the year and fourth overall and his first men's coach of the year award. It also marked the first time a coach has swept both the men's and women's coaching awards since 2006. The SFA women won championships this year in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field.

The women's outstanding track performer was awarded to Stephen F. Austin's Amy Shackelford, who won both the 5,000  (17:13.69) and 10,000 (36:51.17).

Ernestine Cray of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was named the women's freshman of the year. Cray won the long jump with a distance of 19-2 and finished second in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 42-2 3/4. She was the top scorer among all freshmen competing at the championships.

The women's newcomer of the year is UTA's Lindsey Putman. The junior transfer won the women's 1,500  in 4:35.37.
