COLLEGE STATION, Texas—It was an impressive end to the pre-conference season for Northwestern State, as many athletes recorded personal bests Saturday at the Alumni Muster in the final meet prior to the Southland Conference Championships.
All in all, 18 personal bests and 10 more season bests were either set or tied by NSU athletes at the Texas A&M meet with many coming on the track.
"I am very happy with everybody's performances and in their work today after yesterday since it was just a miserable day travel day with all the rain," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "I think this morning we woke up at 49 degrees and it ended up being a gorgeous day. The wind was good early and then faded in the afternoon when we kind of needed it."
Starting off, five Lady Demons set personal bests in the women's 200-meter dash and one more set a season best.
Rushana Dwyer, the reigning SLC Female Track Athlete of the Week, focused on the 200 at the meet and clocked a 23.57 to finish seventh.
Coming in closely behind was another personal best, set by
Margaret Conteh, who clocked a 23.84.
Shania Adderley (24.02),
Maria Umoibang (24.08) and
Jayla Mason (24.72) also ran personal bests, placing 15
th, 16
th and 22
nd, respectively.
Cherie Neal clocked a season-best 25.36 to come in 41
st.
While it wasn't a personal or season best,
Juvonna Cornette continued a strong season with a 23.88 to finish 12
th.
On the men's side in the 200,
Will Achee ran a personal best as well.
Achee, the reigning SLC Male Track Athlete of the Week, ran a 20.97 to come in 10
th.
Antoine Evans Jr. (20.99) and
Desmond Duncan (21.22) each ran season bests to finish 12
th and 15
th, respectively.
Even though they didn't post a personal or season best, four more finished inside the top 20 at the meet—
Tavis Wilson (21.27),
Elijah Rowe (21.29),
Eddy Vu (21.31) and
Charlie Bartholomew (21.35) finished 17
th through 20
th.
In the women's 400-meter dash, threw more posted personal bests, led by
Kahliyah Anderson's 54.44 to come in 13
th place. The time is better than a second better than her previous best.
Adderley (55.58) and
Alaysia Reed (1:00.08) followed suit with personal bests and Conteh ran a 52.82 to finish sixth.
On the men's side,
Mikkel Johansson ran a 48.34 to finish 21
st in the 400.
Two more posted personal bests and three recorded season bests in the men's 100-meter dash, led by
Koen Beavers' 10.31 to post a personal best and move into the top five in the conference, joining his brother
Kalen Beavers and
Keontae Gaines.
Duncan ran a personal-best 10.54 to finish 24
th.
Evans (10.34) and
Kason Jones (10.82) each ran season bests and
Roy Morris (10.86) tied his season best.
While he didn't run a personal or season best, Vu finished seventh with a time of 10.37.
On the women's side, Umoibang ran a season-best 11.81 to finish 16
th.
Cornette placed eighth with an 11.54 and
Sileena Farrell clocked an 11.66 to finish 14
th.
Silet Gray continued a strong stretch with a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 14.05 to place 11
th and
Nia Richards finished right behind her in 12
th with a personal-best 14.08.
She didn't run another personal best in the 400-meter hurdles, but she did clock a 59.71 to finish fifth.
Thea Ring did post a personal best with a time of 1:00.82 to come in eighth.
Clinton Laguerre clocked a 52.49 on the men's side in the 400 hurdles to finish eighth.
"We did a lot of good things happen today on the track," Heimerman said. "I mean, we had some PRs in the field events too, but we did a lot of things that we wanted accomplished today. We didn't get any luck with the winds in the 100s or 200s to help us with some better marks. Even with the little wind, we still ran very well. A lot of kids saw some positive things that'll help them out for a conference."
To kick off the track events, both the men and the women ran a season best in the 4x100 relay, increasing their lead in the SLC.
The women's team ran a 44.84 to finish second out of seven, while the men's team also placed second with a time of 39.42.
In the field events, three more posted personal bests and three also recorded season bests.
Shakera Kirk tossed a personal best 170-05 in the women's discus to finish third.
Shantangelo Williams recorded a throw of 161-7 to finish sixth.
In the men's discus,
Tarajh Hudson placed third with a toss of 182-1 and
Seth Smith recorded a throw of 165-4 to finish fifth.
Teodora Samac continued a sensational season with a personal-best throw of 161-11 to finish fourth in the women's javelin.
Anisha Gibbons (152-4) placed seventh.
Bryan Lay cleared 15-5 in the men's pole vault, which was a major personal best for him. As his previous outdoor best was 14-7.25.
On the women's side,
Aly Jo Warren (12-5.25) posted a season best in the pole vault to finish eighth.
Shakera Williams finished fourth in the women's shot put with a season-best toss of 47-11.25.
Ryah Dates came in closely behind with a throw of 44-1.5 to place sixth.
Three advanced to the finals in the men's shot put, led by
La'Darion Dudley's 53-1.75 to finish in sixth.
Donroy Brown (51-9.75) and Hudson (51-4.5) also advanced to the finals, placing eighth and ninth, respectively.
Three more advanced to the men's long jump finals, led by
Roy Morris' 23-8.25 to place sixth.
Elijah Rowe (23-8.25) and
Randy Kelly (23-2.5) also made the finals, coming in seventh and ninth, respectively.
On the women's side,
Cherie Neal (18-4.5) jumped a season best to finish 17
th.
Samari Finney (19-0.75) came in ninth to lead the Lady Demons.
Kelly also had a strong showing in his signature event, the men's high jump, clearing 6-11.5 to finish fourth.
To round it out,
Margaret Mannering posted a toss of 182-2, falling just shy of a personal best, to finish third.
Ana Manousaridis came in seventh with a toss of 164-9.
Next up is the conference meet, a three-day meet that begins May 14 on the campus of Stephen F. Austin.
