EUGENE, Oregon—Northwestern State stayed true to its moniker of 'Speed Demons,' as the men's 4x400 relay team collected a Second Team All-American slot.

To cap off the day, the 4x400 relay clocked a 3:04.68 to come in 16th place. The Demons were originally in 18th, but two teams were disqualified, which moved NSU into 16th, highlighting the first day of competition at the track nationals at the University of Oregon.

The quartet of Kason Jones, Charlie Bartholomew, Will Achee and Desmond Duncan ran out of the difficult lane of No. 2 and after falling a bit behind, Achee ran a 44.99 split to bring the Demons back into fifth and Duncan held on from there.

"That lane is definitely a tough one to run from," associate head coach Adam Pennington said. "I thought the guys have it everything they had.

Texas and Ohio State were both disqualified due to lane violations, with OSU earning a finals appearance before disqualification.

The SEC dominated the competition, as they had the top five and six of the top eight. LSU won the prelims with a time of 3:00.54, followed by Arkansas (3:00.85) and Georgia (3:00.88).

Morris earned an honorable mention in the men's long jump in his second straight appearance at nationals.

With an 18th place finish by the men's 4x400 relay and 19th place finish in the long jump for Roy Morris, each earned honorable mention All-American spots.

The top eight earn First Team All-American slots and places nine through 16 earn a spot on the second team.

To kick off the day for the Demons, Morris was aiming for his second straight All-American honor. His first jump was 23-9 and he followed that up with a jump of 23-11.75, which was his best attempt of the night.

In 16th place, the distance was 24-5.5.

Kansas State's Tafadzwa Chikomba came in No. 1 in the country and proved it, dominating the competition with a jump of 27-5.5.

"It was a great season and I'm extremely proud of Roy," assistant coach Alex Wills said. "Today the cards weren't in our favor, but we will learn and grow from it. To be able to be here two years in a row is an amazing blessing and the sky's the limit with this amazing young man."

Next up for NSU is the women's 400-meter dash with Rushana Dwyer. The senior runs at 8:41 CST as she aims to become the first ever Lady Demons sprinter to earn First Team All-America honors.
