DENTON, Texas — The Northwestern State Lady Demons wrapped up their early weekend road trip Sunday morning with a 6–1 loss to North Texas at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

The Mean Green (1–2) took control early by securing the doubles point, winning both completed matches.

Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz opened with a 6–2 victory over Honoka Umeda and Lolita Hukasian at the top spot, while Ujin Batsukh and Pia Petelinsek edged Martina Acebedo Bonocore and Athina Grigoriadou, 4–3, at No. 2 doubles to give North Texas a 1–0 lead heading into singles play.

UNT continued to build momentum in singles, earning straight-set wins at the top of the lineup. Carolina Laydner defeated Umeda 6–0, 6–0 at No. 1 singles, followed by Petelinsek's 6–1, 6–1 victory over Grigoriadou at the No. 2 position.

Following the match, head coach Marcos Morelli pointed to consistency as the key takeaway against a strong opponent.

"We need to do the right things all the time if we want to compete against tough teams," Morelli said.

The Lady Demons' (2–2) lone point of the match came from Acebedo Bonocore at No. 3 singles. The freshman rebounded after dropping the second set to defeat Lilly Schultz 6–0, 2–6, 10–7 in a decisive super tiebreak, showcasing resilience in a tightly contested match.

"Martina is a hard competitor, and I'm happy for her," Morelli said. "She's been enjoying the process, and that's showing in how she's competing early this season."

North Texas added to its lead at No. 4 singles when Marina Adati picked up a win following the withdrawal of Hukasian, pushing the score to its final margin.

As NSU turned its attention toward conference preparation, Morelli emphasized the importance of steady improvement.

"We need to be more solid all around, play one point at a time, and focus on playing on our terms," he said.

The Lady Demons return home Sunday to host LSU-Shreveport at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex, with first serve set for 12 p.m., after their originally scheduled Saturday matchup was canceled due to scheduling conflicts and will be rescheduled for next spring.

"Every match is an opportunity to practice our process," Morelli said.
