LUBBOCK, Texas—Regardless of what year it is, the Northwestern State 4x400 relay remains the bread and butter of the program.

For the second consecutive day, NSU broke a school record, and once again, Will Achee was in the middle of it.

The quartet of Achee, Desmond Duncan, Kason Jones and Elijah Rowe ran a 3:08.13 to smash the previous record of 3:09.05, set last season.

The school record for a second straight day highlighted NSU's second and final day at the Corky Classic on Saturday on the campus of Texas Tech.

"It was a really a pretty dang good day," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "Both 4x4 teams ran really well. They were not perfect races by any means but for first meet, it was exciting. They will be fun to watch this year.

"Randy (Kelly) starting off right at his OR, Marquise's (Butler) first college competition and jumps a PR. There were so many great running performances and the throwers competed well."

While the men's team earned headlines, the women's relay didn't do too shabby either.

Despite losing multiple athletes from last season's relay team, the Lady Demons 4x400 team nearly also broke the indoor school record, clocking a 3:36.98.

The team finished fourth out of 34 competing relay teams.

NSU also had a second team that finished 17th with a time of 3:51.02 after finishing second in its heat. The Lady Demons finished fourth among 14 schools' 'B' teams, only behind Texas A&M, Texas Tech and West Texas A&M.

The relay teams weren't the only ones competing well on the track for NSU.

After a nice start to his Demons career, Kalen Beavers posted another indoor personal best Saturday afternoon.

In the men's 200-meter dash, Beavers ran a 21.22 to finish 11th out of 78.

His twin brother Koen Beavers ran a 22.18 to place 52nd and Brian Fisher (23.09) finished 71st.

On the women's side, Dynia Lewis also recorded an indoor personal best, running a 24.67 to place 22nd.

Newcomer Maria Umoibang ran a 24.86 to finish right behind Lewis in 28th. Fellow newcomer Juvonna Cornette (24.94) finished 31st and Kahliyah Anderson (25.24) placed 37th. To round out the Lady Demons in the top 50, Thea Ring ran a 25.47 to finish 50th.

Lalaina Wood also ran a personal best in the indoor, running a 5:57.10 in the mile to finish 29th.

In the women's 600-yard run, freshmen Alaysia Reed (1:29.42) and Halee Jackson (1:34.90) placed 23rd and 27th, respectively.

In the field, freshman Marquis Butler has made a good impression in his first collegiate meet, finishing the weekend with a seventh-place finish out of 17 in the men's triple jump, posting a 49-0.75.

Over in the men's high jump, Randy Kelly cleared 6-10.75 to finish eighth out of 17.

To start the day, Ryah Dates led the way in the women's shot put, tossing a 48-5.25 to finish eighth. Shakera Williams (44-2.75) came in 15th and newcomer Eliska Zahadnickova (32-2.25) placed 18th.
On the men's side, newcomer Donroy Brown (55-7) came in 11th out of 26, while Abner Johnson (52-2.75) placed 15th.

In the women's triple jump, Leah Brown posted a 37-3.25 in her first collegiate triple jump.

"We performed or executed much better today in most of the events," Heimerman said. "Overall, I was very proud how we performed today. We have a lot of work to do, but this group doesn't mind that. We will get back to work and get after it."

The Demons and Lady Demons are off next week before returning to action Jan. 31 at the Pittsburg State Invitational.
