Lady Demons start road swing with trip to Houston Christian

HOUSTON—Playing on the road during Southland Conference play has been a home away from home for the Northwestern State women's basketball team.

NSU (8-7, 5-2) has won all three games away from home during league play, including against McNeese and Nicholls, which are a combined 10-3 at home.

Now the Demons take their unblemished road conference mark on the line when traveling to Houston Christian (4-10, 2-5) on Thursday.

Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Sharp Gymnasium. Fans can watch the game on ESPN or listen to it on KZBL 100.7 FM.

Last time out, NSU rebounded from the loss to UTRGV with a big home win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi behind Tiara Abron's 18 and a terrific second half performance.

In the last win on the road, NSU held Nicholls to fewer than 50 points in a 50-46 win. It was the only road game in a span of five contests.

The last time the Demons started 4-0 on the road in league play was 2014-15.

"On the road, we have the opportunity to spend time together and you're not trying to mix in the outside world," head coach Anna Nimz said. "We keep it tight and close to the vest and we're continuing to grow and get to know one another. The more we like each other off the court, the more we'll like each other on the court. We're excited about it and both games this week will be big road tests."

It will not be easy, as the Huskies come in at 3-1 in front of the home crowd, with the only loss coming to McNeese.

After having just two double digit point performances in the first 13 games, Abron has back-to-back games in double figures in the last two.

Nya Valentine has taken her game to a new level the last seven games, scoring in double figures five times and posting nine points in the other two.

In those seven games, she has averaged 16 points and 4.9 assists per game, including a 22-point performance against Stephen F. Austin and 20 points against Lamar.

Despite the record, the Huskies have been strong in league play on the offensive end of the floor. In the seven games, HCU is shooting 41.7 percent from the field, which is fourth in the league, just ahead of NSU (.401).

"The first thing we'll need to do against HCU is committing to continuing to get better at what we do," Nimz said. "We'll know who the shooters and drivers are, but our biggest thing is continuing to commit to our philosophy and that complete and total buy-in. We see it so much in spurts, but we see when we're doing it, it has been incredibly successful.

"Another big key will be guarding our yard but not being hesitant. They are a very long team, but it is still figuring out how to get into the paint and getting good looks and not just running side-to-side and they have been able to force some opponents to do just that."

Freshman Kamryn McLaurin is the Huskies leading scorer, averaging 12.9 points per game. Tarleton State transfer Grace Booth averaged 11.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Following the game, the Demons round out the weekend with a trip to UIW on Saturday before heading to Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 22. After the three-match road trip, NSU comes back home with a visit from East Texas A&M on Jan. 24.
