NATCHITOCHES—When a team knocks off a top-20 team in the country on the road, people take notice.
Those people include members of the Southland Conference, as both
Emily Senatore and
Kennedy Rist took how SLC weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
A pair of goals from Senatore led Northwestern State to a massive 3-2 upset on the road against No. 19 Texas earns her the SLC Offensive Player of the Week, while a career-high 13 saves from
Kennedy Rist earned her the SLC Goalkeeper of the Week award.
Leading the Demons to their first ever triumph against a ranked opponent, Senatore scored her 12
th and 13
th career goals, her fourth career multi-goal game.
In the big victory, Senatore became the first Demon since 2014 to score two goals in a regular season opener when Esdeina Gonzalez did so against Louisiana College.
Coming off a First Team All-Louisiana and First Team All-Southland selection, Senatore scored in the fifth minute to prove NSU was there to fight for 90 minutes.
If that wasn't enough, she broke a 2-2 deadlock in the 72
nd minute with a blast off a corner kick sequence through traffic, giving the Demons the lead they never relinquished.
The reason NSU was able to hold the lead? Enter Rist.
Making her first start with the Demons, she was a brick wall in net.
With under 10 minutes to play, Rist was in a race with All-SEC performer Amalia Villarreal to the ball in the box. The All-America candidate and Rist met at the ball and Villarreal's shot was blocked away by Rist to preserve the 3-2 advantage.
The redshirt junior from Palm Harbor, Fla., is the third NSU goalkeeper to win a weekly award after
Libe Banuelos and
Kora Fry each took home weekly awards last season.
NSU also had two weekly award winners in the same week Oct. 29 of last season when
Taylor Spitzer won offensive and
Emma Pethel won the defensive players of the week.
Senatore and Rist help lead the Demons into battle against Tarleton State on Thursday before coming back to play the home opener against Alcorn on Sunday.
