FORT WORTH, Texas—On a day to prepare themselves one final time for the Southland Conference Championships, it was a senior and a freshman who stole the show.
Raven-Symone Jarrett (100-meter hurdles) and
William Achee (men's 400-meter dash) each ran massive personal bests to lead the way for Northwestern State as it completed its final meet prior to the SLC Championships on Saturday, the Horned Frog Invite.
"It was overall a pretty good day," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "We had some great performances, one being with Raven and the hurdles. It was a big PR for her and then Will was a monster in the 400. I mean, that was very, very impressive and there's still more left in the tank for both."
Jarrett, a senior from New Britain, Connecticut, clocked a 13.49 in the 100-meter hurdles to place fourth in the competition and become the second-best run this season in the event.
Silet Gray (14.36) placed 11
th in the event and
Jessica Pitcher clocked a personal-best 15.89 to finish 24
th.
Achee, a freshman from Bossier City, also ran a personal best, doing so in the men's 400, clocking a 46.49 to take the top spot in the SLC in the event.
Galen Loyd (47.48) placed seventh and
Kason Jones (48.53) and
Desmond Duncan (48.56) finished 13
th and 14
th, respectively.
Sileena Farrell continued her strong season with another personal best in the women's 200-meter dash, clocking a 24.74 to finish 12
th.
Samari Finney continued her sensational season placing third with a time of 23.93 and
Margaret Conteh (24.27) came in seventh.
On the men's side in the 200,
Tavis Wilson led the Demons with a time of 21.29 to place fifth out of 25.
Elijah Rowe (21.49) placed 10
th and Achee (21.70) finished 18
th.
Wilson also clocked a 10.46 in the 100-meter dash to place eighth. Both
Roy Morris and
Tajae Francis finished with a time of 11.00.
On the women's side in the 100,
Maygan Shaw finished with a time of 11.64 to place eighth out of 23. Farrell placed 10
th with an 11.71 and Finney ran a personal-best 11.83 to come in 14
th.
Tranasia Jones (55.68) finished in fifth place to lead the Lady Demons in the women's 400.
A pair of Demons ran season bests in the men's 110-meter hurdles—
Brian Fisher (14.95) and
Bruce Boon (15.64)—while
Dishaun Lamb led the way for Northwestern State, clocking a 14.23 to place sixth.
Kahliyah Anderson came in seventh in the women's 400-meter hurdles, clocking a 1:02.48.
In the men's 800-meter run, reigning SLC Male Track Athlete of the Week
Vincente Graiani ran a 1:50.64 to finish 10
th out of 17.
In the 4x400 relays, both genders finished in third place, as the men—Jones, Rowe, Duncan and
Mikkel Johansson—ran a 3:14.57, while the women's team of Anderson, Conteh, Jones and
Jayla Mason ran a 3:51.24.
Running unattached,
John Klein posted a personal best in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:36.08.
Over at the jumps, three finished in the top nine, led by Morris' jump of 24-3.25 in the men's long jump to place fifth, while Rowe placed sixth with a jump of 24-3. Finishing ninth,
Randy Kelly posted a personal-best 23-6.75.
On the women's side,
Jaslyn Smith posted a season best jump of 19-7.5 to come in sixth.
Briana Green placed 17
th with a jump of 17-6.75.
Smith placed also placed sixth in the women's triple jump with a jump of 40-4.25, while Kelly also finished ninth in the men's high jump, clearing 6-6.75.
In the women's pole vault,
Kalli Knott placed fifth with a clearance of 12-7.5 and
Peyten Ware (11-1.75) finished 12
th.
Over at the throws, a pair of personal bests were set at the women's javelin. Freshmen Mikayka Mondello (120-2) and
Emily Miller (115-0) tossed personal bests to place 11
th and 13
th, respectively.
Another freshman led the way for the Lady Demons in the event, as
Teodora Samac placed seventh, tossing a 140-3.
On the men's side,
Joseph Yount backed up his personal best from last meet with another terrific performance, tossing a 196-6 to finish third. Freshman
Maddox Reine (171-9) finished fifth.
In the women's discus,
Shanice Hutson tossed a season-best 149-6 to finish seventh, sandwiched in between
Shakera Kirk (157-8) and
Tahisha Thompson (147-9).
Seth Smith led the way on the men's side, tossing a 148-7 to finish 12
th while
Abner Johnson's 143-2 was 19
th.
Four Lady Demons placed in the top 11 in the women's shot put, led by
Carnitra Mackey's 46-2 to place sixth.
Shakera Williams (44-10.25), Hutson (43-2) and
Ryah Dates (42-10.25) finished ninth through 11
th.
Justin Craft led the Demons in the men's shot put, throwing a 54-8.5 and Johnson (49-5.25 finished 10
th.
Bernesha Knowles finished sixth in the women's hammer with a throw of 160-2.
"Overall, I think it was a good day and has a set up hopefully in a good situation for a conference in two weeks," Heimerman said. "We will head back to Natchitoches after getting some food and get ready for a conference."
The track and field teams take a bit of a break before heading to Houston for the SLC Championships at Rice, which start May 15.
