WACO, Texas—There aren't enough positive adjectives to describe the greatness of
Maygan Shaw.
It seems like every meet she has out-done herself, and this one was no different, which highlighted Northwestern State's first day at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Friday.
In the women's 200-meter dash, Shaw clocked a personal-best 23.37 to finish 10
th out of 100 competitors and first among seven Lady Demons.
Margaret Conteh clocked a 24.46 in the 200 to place 28
th and second among Lady Demons in the event.
Kahliyah Anderson (25.24) and
Tranasia Jones (25.32) finished back-to-back, placing 60
th and 61
st, respectively.
Jayla Mason ran a 25.69 to finish 72
nd,
Silet Gray (25.89) placed 79
th and
Cherie Neal (26.33) finished 86
th in a loaded field.
On the men's side,
Tavis Wilson led the Demons with a 21.31 to place 19
th out of 85 finishers in the men's 200-meter dash.
Mikkel Johansson ran a 21.37 to finish 25
th overall and second among Demons.
Elijah Rowe (21.52) and
Galen Loyd (21.52) finished back-to-back, placing 25
th and 36
th, and
Desmond Duncan placed 40
th with a time of 21.56.
William Achee ran a 21.79 to finish 53
rd.
Kason Jones ran a season-best 22.32 to come in 75
th and
Robert Norton placed closely behind in 78
th with a 22.61.
In the jumps,
Roy Morris nearly matched a season best with a jump of 24-7.25 to place seventh out of 20 competitors in the men's long jump.
On the women's side,
Samari Finney continued her strong stretch with a jump of 19-3.5 to finish 11
th.
Jaslyn Smith (18-7) and
Victoria Byrd (15-7) came 20
th and 31
st, respectively.
Kalli Knott cleared 12-2.5 in the women's pole vault to place 15
th while
Maxwell Gautreau cleared 15-1.75 to finish in 19
th on the men's side.
At the throws events,
Shakera Kirk tossed a 150-07 to place 12
th in the women's discus on the heels of winning the event at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational.
Tahisha Thompson (145-01) finished closely behind in the 14
th.
In the men's discus,
Seth Smith posted a toss of 153-06 to finish 15
th.
At the men's hammer,
Donovahn Watkins threw a 163-08 to also place 15
th, while
Abner Johnson (151-00) come in 20
th.
Thompson posted a distance of 155-10 in the women's hammer throw, placing 18
th and
Bernesha Knowles' 143-00 was good enough for 21
st.
The teams are back at it for the second and final day Saturday with the women's javelin beginning the day at 11 a.m. The track events start at 12:30 with the women's 100-meter hurdle prelims.
