SAN ANTONIO – After nearly two weeks, the Northwestern State Lady Demons tennis team is set to resume Southland Conference play against UIW on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mabry Tennis Center
The Lady Demons (4-6, 4-0) are coming off a 10-day break after this past week's Tarleton cancellation.
"The break was beneficial for the girls, giving them time to recover from the physical demands of the season," head coach Marcos Morelli said. "Now, they're refreshed, motivated, and eager to get back to playing."
In their last match, the Lady Demons fell in a tight 4-2 match to Rhode Island at home, snapping a four-match winning streak.
Despite the loss, there were standout performances.
The new pairing of Pika Doberlet and Maria Farina kickstarted the day for the Lady Demons with a win over URI's Nikki Fernando and Katharina Spieth 6-2.
The duo of Zoi Spyrou and Honoka Umeda clinched a 7-5 victory in doubles, while Umeda secured a 7-5, 6-1 singles win on court 2.
UIW (3-8, 1-2) enters the match on a two-game conference skid, falling to McNeese 7-0 on March 10 and losing to Southeastern two days after, 5-2.
"Our upper-class players are setting the tone, letting their teammates know the depth of this conference," says Morelli. "Every match is a battle."
Following the match against UIW, Northwestern State continues its road trip to Beaumont, Texas, to face Lamar on Monday at 11 a.m.
