BATON ROUGE—During the first three meets for Northwestern State, it has broken six indoor school records, including four from the two relay teams.
Those record-breaking relay teams headline their teams as they lead the way into the LSU Twilight on Friday, their final scheduled meet prior to Southland Conference Indoor Championships.
The field events kick the meet off at 9 a.m at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse with the women's weight throw. The running events start at noon with the women's mile.
Heading to LSU comes at the end of a chilly week in Natchitoches, one in which is causing Northwestern State to use the meet as much as a practice as a meet.
"We're glad we have this meet," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "The weather has been pretty bad this week and it feels like it is about 19 degrees out, so we haven't been able to get a whole lot done the past few days and we don't really have any place indoor to do anything, so this meet is as much of a practice as it is a meet. This will great preparation for the week after when we are at indoor conference."
In addition to Northwestern State and the host LSU, 10 teams are taking part in the meet, including Tulane, Alabama and fellow SLC foes Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese.
Dynia Lewis has had a stellar start to her season. She is coming off a pair of top three finishes at the Gorilla Classic on the campus of Pittsburg State.
She won the 60-meter hurdles, running a personal-best 8.42, which is also the top time in the conference this season. Lewis followed that up by finishing third in the 60-meter dash, running a season-best 7.55.
Maygan Shaw started the indoor season with a conference female track athlete of the year and has not let up. This past weekend, she broke another program record, running a 52.90 in the 400-meter dash on day one of the Tyson Invitational.
The Lady Demons have five of the top eight in the SLC in the event, led by Shaw at the top.
Margaret Conteh (53.94) is right behind Shaw in second, while
Tranasia Jones (55.12),
Kahliyah Anderson (55.33) and
Jayla Mason (55.83) are in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Samari Finney is in eighth with a time of 55.96.
Madison Brown posted a personal best at the Gorilla Classic in the pole vault this past meet, clearing 12-10.75. She furthers her lead in the top mark in the league, as the second-best height in the SLC is 12-2.5.
On the men's side,
Kason Jones ran well this past meet at the Tyson Invitational, clocking a 47.51 in the 400-meter dash, which is the second best time in the conference. Being second, he is sandwiched between two teammates,
Galen Loyd and
William Achee.
Loyd and Achee each posted their teams at Texas Tech at the Stan Scott Invite & Multis. In the 400,
Vincente Graiani is also sixth in the league.
Following the meet, the track & field teams head to Birmingham, Alabama, for the SLC Championships, a two-day meet that begins March 2.
"We're looking to stay healthy, at this point," Heimerman said. "We want to just go in and get some work done and hopefully give these student-athletes the best opportunity to set them up for success."
