NSU buries school-record 18 3-pointers in historic victory

NATCHITOCHES—Northwestern State set multiple school records during a dominant afternoon at Prather Coliseum.

NSU (2-2) shattered a school record with 18 3-pointers, helping the Demons roll to a 108-30 victory over Ecclesia (1-4) on Friday afternoon.

The 78-point triumph is also a school record, setting a mark they set last season in a 98-27 win over Arkansas Baptist nearly exactly a year ago to the date.

The Demons jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the first quarter and never ceased control. NSU had two runs of at least 24 points, also having a 24-0 run that spanned the second and third quarters to turn a 40-14 lead into a 64-14 runaway.

"Overall, I am really excited," head coach Anna Nimz said. "Coming back from the Midwest, there were a few things I wanted to see growth in, and we saw a handful of those things. We cut down on our turnovers, and we won the rebounding war. What is exciting is we still have a couple of coachable points that are going to allow us to grow and get better."

The first possession of the game set the tone, as Tiara Abron found Nya Valentine for the open 3-pointer, which she buried.

After going 2-of-16 in the first three games from deep, Valentine drained three of six from behind the arc to find her groove again, part of an 11-point performance.

She also contributed five assists and three steals as well.

Her three steals led a Demons team that recorded 14 steals and forced 35 Ecclesia turnovers, the most it has forced since forcing 39 against LSU-Shreveport in 2019.

Not to be out-done, leading scorer Vernell Atamah scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter. Atamah made five more triples, bringing her total to 18 this season.

It took her 15 games to reach 18 made triples last season.

Every player on the Demons roster scored and all but one made at least one field goal.

Payton Miller scored a career-high 12, starting with a bucket and foul in the first quarter and finished it with a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including draining the record-breaking 3-pointer.

NSU's previous 3-point record was 14, set five times, most recently at Southeastern Louisiana in 2016.

"I am starting to see that the coaches and teammates have so much confidence in me," Miller said. "I don't get in trouble just from my coaches, I get told by my teammates to shoot the ball. It is allowing me to come out of my comfort zone and even if I miss, my teammates are going to be there to support me and get my rebounds."

Other than Atamah's four made 3-pointers, Alexis Calderon was second with four made 3-pointers, draining 4-of-8, part of her 14-point performance after not scoring in the first three contests.

Dasia Turner, a transfer from Philander Smith, nearly posted a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds to go along with four assists and three blocks.

Once again, Carla Celaya filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Overall, six players either scored a career high or tied a career-high in Division I basketball—Kassim, Miller, Turner, Mika Jarrett, Cimiya Rideaux and Clarence Djuela, with Rideaux scoring her first collegiate bucket.

Five players scored in double figures, the most since the Demons also had five in double figures in a home victory over McNeese in January 2024.

Of NSU's 40 made baskets, 31 of them came off an assist, the most assists in a game since at least 2001-02.

"I believe we have a lot more firepower sitting on the bench," Nimz said. "Even on the court, I know a lot of eyes are always looking at Vee (Atamah), but on any given night, anybody can have a big night.

"Then to have 31 assists, that is an impressive stat line. I am not sure I have ever seen that, no matter what the score has been."

NSU wraps up its string of two consecutive contests at home with a game against Arkansas Baptist on Nov. 21 at Prather Coliseum, before heading to the Emerald Coast Classic.
