Blake named SLC Player of the Week

NATCHITOCHES—Helping lead Northwesterm State in a big way to a pair of wins over the weekend against a pair of in-state rivals and its best Southland Conference start in nearly a decade earned Mya Blake the SLC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Blake, a senior from California, averaged 17.5 points per game, nine rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, as the Demons won a pair of home games against McNeese and Nicholls.

She is the first Demon to be named SLC Player of the Week since Candice Parramore in January 2023.

In Thursday's game against McNeese. She scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half, helping the Demons drop 50 points in the final 20 minutes to pull away with a 70-55 victory.

Blake made a pair of 3-pointers, including one in third that gave the Demons a bit of breathing room, making it 36-30 midway through the quarter.

She followed it up with a 19-point performance, leading the Demons to a 56-44 win over Nicholls.

Blake spearheaded a late surge to lead the Demons to a victory, as Northwestern State finished the game on a 12-0 run. Blake scored four points and recorded an assist during the run, as well as leading the defense that held the Colonels scoreless the final five minutes.

Her 19 points were the most Blake scored since dropping 22 at Tarleton State on Nov. 16.

Blake's 13.9 points per game is sixth in the league, as well as 17th in rebounding (4.7) and fourth in assists (3.8).

Of the top 17 players in the league in rebounding, she is the shortest at 5-5 and one of just three players under 5-11.

Northwestern State faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday in the lone game of the week before coming back for two in a row at Prather Coliseum, starting Jan. 16 against New Orleans.
