NATCHITOCHES—A veteran and a newcomer were rewarded with after terrific showings at the track and field opener at the Corky Classic.
Senior
Maygan Shaw and newcomer sophomore
Vincente Graiani were named Southland Conference Female and Male Track Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Shaw, a senior from Pineville, posted three SLC-leading marks, including a conference record in the 4x400 relay.
In the 4x400 relay, Shaw, along with
Tranasia Jones, Margaret Cohen and
Samari Finney, clocked a 3:40.74 in Lubbock to post the indoor SLC mark, which not only broke the conference mark, but also more than five seconds better than second place in the SLC.
If that wasn't enough, she set an indoor personal best by running a 23.90 in the 200-meter dash and clocked a 54.26 in the 400-meters, both of which are the top mark in the league so far.
On the men's side, Graiani took home the track athlete of the week award.
Graiani, a transfer from Indiana, ran a 47.90 in the 400-meter dash and was a member of the men's 4x400 relay team, which clocked a 3:12.78, both of which are the top mark in the conference this season. The 4x400 relay nearly broke the school indoor record.
He also ran a 21.70 in the 200-meter dash, which is a close second in the SLC. All three of his times are personal bests.
After a week off, the teams head right back to Lubbock for the Stan Scott Invite and Multis, a two-day event beginning Jan. 31.
