LUBBOCK, Texas—The women's 4x400 relay team posted an indoor Southland Conference record on the final day of the Corky Classic on Saturday on the campus of Texas Tech.
The quartet of
Maygan Shaw,
Tranasia Jones,
Margaret Conteh and
Samari Finney clocked a 3:40.74 to place eighth out of 28 teams.
That group broke a 5-year-old record of 3:41.29, set by a quartet of Janiel Moore Jayla Fields, Erin Wilson and Natashia Jackson.
The team was the only non-power conference school in the top 10, led by Texas A&M (3:31.34) and South Carolina (3:32.29).
"It was a great overall day," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "We had a lot of personal bests today. The men's 200 had
Kason Jones, Will Achae, and
Tavis Wilson all run personal bests and Maygan and Khaliyia Anderson had personal bests on the women's side.
"All three relays ran well. The women broke the school and the conference record. That speaks volumes of how special this group can be with two new legs this year. Men came extremely close also to breaking the school record. Those four guys are going to do something special this year. Huge anchor leg by freshman Will Achee."

Northwestern State had two women's 4x400 relay groups, as the other group of
Kahliyah Anderson,
Victoria Byrd,
Jayla Mason and
Sileena Farrell finished 17
th with a time of 3:50.48.
On the men's side, the Demons nearly set an indoor record, as the group of
Mikkel Johansson,
Desmond Duncan,
Vincente Graiani and
William Achee ran a 3:12.78 to place 13
th out of 32.
The sprinters showed out in the 200-meter dash.
In the "A" section, Shaw ran an indoor personal best 23.90 to place 13
th out of 29, while on the men's side, Duncan ran a 22.63, nearly posting an indoor best.
Kason Jones ran a 21.66 to place 16
th in the "B" section, which blew past his previous personal best of 21.95.
Graiani also clocked a 21.70 to finish in 18
th for a personal best, while Achee ran a 21.79 in his first collegiate 200. Wilson ran a 21.87 to place 26
th.
Anderson posted a personal best on the women's side, clocking a 24.52 to place 13
th out of 77 competitors. Conteh finished closely behind with a 24.77 to finish 20
th.
Finney clocked a 25.17 and Byrd ran a 25.19 to finish 38
th and 39
th, respectively.
Jayla Mason ran a 25.41 to finish 44
th.
In the distance,
Robert Norton (1:15.38) placed 30
th in the 600-yard run, while
Korbin Shumate (4:31.23) finished 25
th out of 36 in the mile.
Randy Kelly matched a personal best by clearing 6-11.5, doing so on his third attempt, to place seventh.
In the throws,
Abner Johnson (51-4.75) finished 18
th out of 27 throwers to lead the Demons in the weight throw.
Justin Craft (50-10) placed right behind Johnson in 19
th, while
Tarajh Hudson (48-6.75) finished in 23
rd.
On the women's side,
Shakera Williams threw a 43-3.25 to finish 19
th out of 26.
After a week off, the track & field teams head back to Texas Tech for the Stan Scott Invite and Multis, a two-day event that begins Jan. 31.
