BATON ROUGE—Another meet, another record set by the Northwestern State track teams.
Once again,
Sanaria Butler was at the forefront of the broken record.
After breaking three as a member of relay teams already this outdoor season, she wanted to break one solo this time around.
Butler set a Southland Conference record, running a blistering 52.11 in the women's 400 to finish third in the LSU Alumni Gold. She came in first among attached collegiate athletes and was the only top five finisher like that.
"Honestly, we were expecting faster overall," associate head coach
Adam Pennington said. "But being in lane nine with no one in front of you is hard. She had to face this last year at nationals and only ran 52.5 in prime shape.
"She also hasn't practiced in over a week due to a small injury, so we didn't know for sure if she'd be ready today."
Tranasia Jones (55.38) placed 21
st and
Samari Finney (55.95) finished 23
rd in the women's 400.
Like she does so often, Butler was in the middle of another strong run by the women's 4x400 relay team.
Butler, Jones,
Vanessa Balde and
Maygan Shaw ran a 3:43.39 in the relay to come in first in the event.
The men's 4x400 relay team finished in third place, running a 3:12.73, finishing only behind LSU and Eastern Michigan.
On the men's side in the 400,
Cyrus Jacobs clocked a personal-best 47.29 to place 18
th.
Jaysaun Smith ran a season-best 47.87 to finish 25
th.
Keontae Gaines (10.22) and
Mikkel Johansson (10.54) each ran a personal best in the men's 100-meter hurdles, placing fifth and 17
th, respectively.
"Keonta was really impressive, running another PR," Pennington said. "It was especially impressive after sitting out from an injury since Texas Relays."
On the women's side,
Lynell Washington clocked an 11.68 in the 100.
Balde ran 13.42 in the women's 100-meter hurdles to finish 13
th.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles,
Taj Morris finished 15
th with a time of 14.51.
Tim Pelkmans posted a personal best in the event, running a 15.23.
Three personal bests were set in the men's and women's 800-meter run.
On the men's side,
Brian Norton (1:54.77) and
Evan Wilson (2:00.53) did, while
Makaya Damon (2:36.44) did so for the women.
In the throws,
Djimon Gumbs took the top spot in the men's shot put, tossing a 64-10.5.
Tarajh Hudson threw a personal-best 53-7.75 in the event, finishing seventh.
Three Demons made the top seven in the men's discus, led by
Diamante Gumbs (181-08) to place fifth out of 15.
Djimon Gumbs (180-07) and Hudson (178-09) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
"I thought all three discus guys did pretty well," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "We were just missing the timing a little bit. It was very hot and humid so for the ones who did two events it was impressive to see how they battled in the second to do well."
On the women's side,
Kaitlyn Washington finished fifth, tossing a 170-01.
"I didn't even think Kaitlyn looked great, but threw a PR," Heimerman said. "That is awesome because it shows that she can throw further."
In the women's shot put,
Shakera Williams (46-8.25) finished eight, while
Ianna Roach (46-1.5) placed ninth and
Carnitra Mackey (44-9.5) came in 10
th.
In the jumps,
Jaslyn Smith posted a leap of 18-9.25 to finish seventh.
Andrew Gilreath came in 10
th on the men's side in the long jump.
Victoria Byrd posted a 38-8.75 in the women's triple jump, which is an outdoor best.
Madison Brown, coming off a victory at the Leon Johnson Invitational, cleated 12-5.5 in the women's pole vault.
Away from Baton Rouge,
John Klein and
Korbin Shumate each ran personal bests in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas.
Klein ran a 9:40.74 to place fourth out of nine finishers, while Shumate clocked a 9:42.49 to finish sixth. Shumate's time was 25 seconds better than his previous best.
NSU travels to Texas Tech for its final meet before the conference championships. The Corky/Crofoot Shootout is a two-day event that begins Friday in Lubbock, Texas.
