BATON ROUGE—One week after setting a personal best and British Virgin Islands best,
Diamante Gumbs did one better, breaking those marks and setting the school record in the event, highlighting a successful day at the Keyth Talley Invitational on Saturday.
In the Louisiana Classic in the previous meet, Gumbs tossed a 185-4 in the hammer throw to break a personal record and find his way atop the records books of his home country, the British Virgin Islands.
He smashed that mark in Baton Rouge, recording a distance of 193-4, which not only set a personal best and BVI record, but also a program mark, which was set in 2018 by Marquise Foster (188-0), which put him fourth at the meet in the hammer.
Gumbs wasn't the only thrower who had a strong showing.
Bernesha Knowles also set a personal best in the hammer, throwing a 172-0 to finish seventh.
In the women's shot put, NSU had two of the top four, led by
Ianna Roach's 44-11.25, finishing second out of 12.
Shakera Williams' personal-best 44-1.5 was good enough for fourth.
"Overall, it was a great day," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "Diamante and Bernesha looked very good and the exciting thing is that they both way more in the tank. The other throwing events went well also, considering the training we did this past week.
The jumpers had some great performances too. Randy (high jump), Andrew and Samari (long jump). The runners were impressive, per usual, as well. The crazy thing is I think everyone can improve and it should make for a fun outdoor season."
On the men's side in the shot put,
Tarajh Hudson (51-10) and
Justin Craft (51-5) each posted personal bests, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Shakera Kirk tossed a season-best 154-11 to finish fourth out of 15 in the women's discus.
Kaitlyn Washington, fresh off her terrific showing in Lafayette, came in fifth in the event with a distance of 152-9.
In the men's discus, all three finished in the top six, led by
Diamante Gumbs, whose 175-6 placed fourth. He was immediately followed by his twin brother
Djimon Gumbs (173-8) and Hudson (173-1), who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Just like in Lafayette, the relay teams put on a show as well.
This time around, it was the women's 4x400 that found the record book.
While it didn't break the school record like the 4x100 in Lafayette, it did finish second, running a 3:36.04. The group of
Maygan Shaw,
Sanaria Butler,
Tranasia Jones and
Vanessa Balde came in second in the meet, finishing just below LSU's time of 3:31.22.
Balde had a big day. Not only did she contribute in a massive way in the relays, but she also set a personal record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 13.27 to place fourth out of 30 finishers.
"The relays ran really well," associate head coach
Adam Pennington said. "With Lynell not running on 4x1 and Victoria (Byrd) stepping up with an opportunity was big. Women's 4x4 was right off the school record and Vanessa had our fastest split, concluding a massive day. Her personal best in the hurdles was a shock to her. I'm so happy, as she dealt with some adversity indoors and now her talent is showing after all the hard work she puts in."
Raven-Symone Jarrett ran a season-best 14.30 to finish 17
th.
On the men's side in the 110-meter hurdles,
Taj Morris ran a season-best 14.40 to finish fourth.
Sanaria Butler once again ran well. Not only did she perform in the relays, but also finished second in the women's 400-meter dash, clocking a 52.80.
Maygan Shaw also finished in the top five, running a 53.89. Jones placed 10
th with a time of 55.53.
Victoria Byrd set a pair of personal bests, running a 24.58 in the women's 200 and an 11.74 in the women's 100.
Leah Thompson and
Lalaina Wood, who each ran a 5:20.88, both set personal bests in the women's 1500.
On the men's side, three finished in the top 10 in the 100-meter dash, led by
Keontae Gaines, who posted a personal-best-tying time of 10.24 to finish fifth.
Zachaeus Beard placed right behind him in sixth with a time of 10.26, his best time at NSU.
Tavis Wilson, who had a strong Louisiana Classic, set a personal best with a time of 10.39 to place 10
th.
Gaines also ran a 20.80 in the 200-meters to place second out of 43 finishers. Wilson also posted a collegiate best in this event, clocking a 21.70.
Jaysaun Smith led a group of Demons who finished in the top 12 in the 400. Smith ran a 48.18 to place third out of 27.

The 4x100 relay team of Beard, Gaines, Jacobs and Johansson finished second with a time of 39.89, a season best.
Korbin Shumate set a personal best in the men's 1500, running a 4:03.77 to place 11

In the jumps, all three pole vaulters posted season-best heights. For the women,

Madison Brown each cleared 12-6, while
Hayden Barrios cleared 15-11.25 on the men's side.
Randy Kelly continued his sensational 2024 by clearing a season-best 6-11 in the high jump, just missing his personal-best height.

On the women's side in the long jump, three finished in the top 10, led by
