DENTON, Texas—The Northwestern State women's basketball team wraps up a three-game Texas road trip with a visit to North Texas on Wednesday.
Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at The Super Pit and can be viewed on ESPN+.
Despite falling in the first two games of the road trip, there were plenty of positives for the Demons (2-3) to take away.
Northwestern State started strong in the first game of the back-to-back against Tarleton State and the Demons hung around into the second half on the back end of the back-to-back against Texas A&M.
Even though the Demons played on back-to-back days, they played right with the Aggies for good stretches and had the contest within nine midway through the third quarter before a 16-3 run over 4:13 to put the game away.
Mya Blake has continued a strong start to the season, recording 55 points, 10 assists and 11 steals in the three games this past week, including scoring 22, dishing out three assists and three steals against Tarleton State.
Overall, her 14 steals are the second-most in the Southland Conference.
Blake drained four triples against the Texans, as the Demons continue to shoot the 3-point shot, ranking 11
th nationally in the triple attempts were game.
Blake is one of four Demons—joining
Vernell Atamah,
Sharna Ayres and
Zhane Thompson—to bury at least seven 3-pointers for Northwestern State this season.
Of those four, three—Blake, Thompson and Atamah—are all shooting at least 35 percent from deep and Thompson (45.2 percent) and Blake (40 percent) are each shooting at least 40 percent from outside the arc.
A pair of Demons—
Payton Miller (St. Paul) and Atamah (Mesquite)—are Demons making their return to the Metroplex.
As a freshman, Atamah has started all five games in a lineup that features four seniors/graduate students.
She is second on the team in minutes (24.2) and points (11.0) per game, while leading the Demons in rebounds (6.2) per contest.
Atamah has turned it on the past two games when the competition has improved. In the previous two games against Tarleton State and Texas A&M, she has averaged 16.5 ppg.
In high school, Atamah was a three-time all-district player at John D. Horn High with more than 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career. As a senior, she posted a career-best 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds.
Miller has played in all five games so far as a freshman off the bench, scoring 10 total points, posting a season-high seven points in the victory over Arkansas Baptist on Nov. 12.
A four-time all-district player at Wylie High, she posted 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals as a senior.
UNT (3-1) is coming off a road victory against Abilene Christian and has only lost at No. 25 Oregon. This is the first home game since Nov. 7 for the Mean Green, which have won their first two in front of the home crowd.
The Mean Green are led by Tommisha Lampkin, who averages a double-double. She records 15.5 points and 11 boards per game. She's coming off a 22-point and 13-rebound performance at ACU.
Following the contest, the Demons come back to Natchitoches for a home game Nov. 26 against Southern-New Orleans before starting the Southland Conference matchup in early December at UIW.
