STEPHENVILLE, Texas—
Mya Blake and
Vernell Atamah combined for 41 points, but Northwestern State could not control Tarleton State on the glass in a 73-56 road loss Saturday at Wisdom Gymnasium.
The Demons (2-2) were out-rebounded 40-28 and the Texans (2-2) made 47 percent of their 3-pointers, which overcame strong outings from Blake and Atamah.
For the second straight game, Blake broke the 20-point mark, pouring in 22, while Atamah dropped in a career-high 19.
The duo combined to splash seven triples of the Demons' 10 total, marking their third game of four they have made double digits in 3-pointers made.
"We kept the game close until the end," head coach
Anna Nimz said. "The score does not reflect how the game was played for the majority of time. I am proud of how the girls played for a substantial amout of time. There were a lot of positives to grow from and a lot of details to continue to work on."
Blake picked up right where she left off from the Arkansas Baptist game, scoring 11 of her 22 points in the opening quarter, tallying all the Demons points in the first frame. She made all four of her shot attempts in the quarter.
The senior led the Demons to a fast start, racing out to an 8-3 advantage. But a 15-1 run moved the Texans into the lead, one they never relinquished.
Tarleton State broke the game open a bit in the second quarter. Following Blake's 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 24-19, the Texans responded with a 14-3 run to take a 38-22 lead before going into the locker room with a 13-point advantage.
The run was led off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Mar'Cyah Willis, who scored the six points in the game.
Atamah scored eight points in a 13-point quarter, which saw Northwestern State hold Tarleton State to just seven points and trim the deficit to 45-38.
In addition to Atamah tallying eight points, she assisted on a triple from
Zhane Thompson to be involved in 11 of the 13 points in the quarter.
Atamah nearly posted a double-double, hauling down seven rebounds to go with her 19 points.
Thompson dropped in eight, connecting on two more triples, in the contest.
However, the Texans dominated the final period to break open a close game into a deceiving final score.
Atamah did her best to keep the Demons in the game, but a 28-point quarter by the Texans proved too much to overcome.
Tarleton State had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Arieona Rosborough's 14 points. Jakoriah Long and Tyler Jackson each tallied 11, while Faith Acker scored 10.
Rosborough secured seven boards, six of them offensive, as the Texans hauled in 15 offensive rebounds.
Northwestern State continues its trip to Texas on Sunday with a visit to Texas A&M at 2 p.m. before finishing up at North Texas on Wednesday.
