COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Northwestern State women's basketball team hung around for more than one half, but the size of Texas A&M proved too much in a 75-54 loss Sunday afternoon at Reed Arena on the second game of a back-to-back.
Playing on back-to-back days, the Demons (2-3) trailed by just two past midway through the first half, despite the fact that Texas A&M (3-2) made six of its 10 shots in the first quarter.
"I'm incredibly proud of our effort and overall game today," head coach
Anna Nimz said. "The score does not reflect how the game played out. There are so many positives and correctable mistakes."
But a 10-2 run in a span of just over two minutes gave the Aggies breathing room, opening up an 11-point halftime lead.
After attempting double digit 3-point attempts in its first three games of the season, the Aggies relied on the inside game in the past two contests.
With a size advantage, the Aggies shot just nine 3-pointers, making one.
Of the 75 points TAMU scored, 62 were either scored in the paint or the free throw line, recording 46 points in the paint and making 16-of-26 shots from the charity stripe.
The Aggies controlled the post, out-rebounding the Demons 48-27.
Mya Blake,
Vernell Atamah and
Sharna Ayres scored 15 of the first 17 points for Northwestern State to keep the Demons in the game.
After posting 19 points Saturday at Tarleton State, Atamah continued a strong road trip with 14 more points, leading the scoring for the Demons. She also added a team-best six rebounds.
Midway through the third quarter,
Zhane Thompson buried a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 40-31, but the Aggies responded with five straight points and the Demons never cut the deficit to single digits again.
Following cutting it to nine points in the third quarter, the Aggies went on an extended 16-3 run to go on top by a game-high 22 points.
Thompson broke out again after scoring 14 combined in the first three games after pouring in 20 points in the season opener against Champion Christian. She dropped in 12 points, scoring all on four triples.
The Demons made eight 3-pointers in 29 attempts, led by Thompson's four. Atamah posted two triples and Blake and Ayres each made one.
Blake recorded three more steals, helping the Demons force 16 turnovers against the SEC foe. The senior scored 11 points, joining Atamah and Thompson in double figures for Northwestern State.
Jada Malone led Texas A&M, pouring in a game-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. She added nine rebounds in a near double-double.
Malone stuffed the stat sheet, also blocking three shots and recording four steals.
While Malone fell just shy, Lauren Ware did post a double-double, though, scoring 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Sahara Jones was the third member of the Aggies to reach double figures, recording 14 points, as well as three assists and two steals.
Northwestern State wraps up its three-game Texas road trip with a visit to North Texas on Wednesday before returning home for a contest against Southern-New Orleans on Nov. 26.
