STEPHENVILLE/COLLEGE STATION, Texas—A confident Northwestern State women's basketball team heads to the state of Texas to begin a three-game Lone Star State road trip, beginning with back-to-back games against Tarleton State and Texas A&M.
The Demons (2-1) are coming off the largest margin of victory in school history, a 71-point win over Arkansas Baptist, and turn their sights to the state of Texas for a three-game road trip.
Northwestern State begins with trips to Tarleton State on Saturday and Texas A&M on Sunday.
Saturday's contest at Tarleton begins at 1 p.m. on ESPN+, while tip-off for Sunday's matchup at Texas A&M is at 2 p.m. and will be televised on SEC Network +.
"We are moving into the thick of the non-conference season, matching up with someone a little bit more even" head coach
Anna Nimz said. "I think this game is going to be our first test. What are we made of and where are we actually at? I think that is a good thing."
Last time out,
Mya Blake (22) and
Sharna Ayres (20) each scored at least 20 points, the first time the Demons have had two 20-point scorers since Nautica Grant and RaVon Nero against UIW on Feb 27, 2019.
Zhane Thompson also recorded 20 points in a game, doing so in the season opener against Champion Christian, highlighting the balanced scoring for the Demons.
Long-distance shooting has helped Northwestern State win two of its first three games. Blake, who is coming off a 5-for-6 game from behind the arc, Thompson and Ayres all have splashed at least seven 3-pointers in the first three contests.
Against ABC, Northwestern State buried 12 3-pointers, matching the 12 it hit against CCC. Over the first three games, the Demons have made 29 triples, the most in a three-game stretch since the 2015-16 season when they made 30 3-pointers in wins over Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin and New Orleans.
While the Demons have used the 3-point shot to begin the season, the Texans have done their damage inside the arc.
Of Tarleton's 58 made field goals, 14 of the makes have been from behind the arc.
Arieona Rosborough has made 15 of her 29 shot attempts with all but three coming inside the 3-point line.
The transfer from Mary-Hardin Baylor poured in 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting in the loss at Arizona on Nov. 7.
The Texans are a veteran team, as all six players who have started games this season for them are seniors.
"They've added some really nice pieces to the puzzle, Nimz said. "But they are returning a lot of significant players. We're going to have to really be on our 'A' game and the defense will have to be incredibly disciplined. They are a very good time with lots of firepower. They are very quick and have a nice inside presence. This is a game that we have to show we can be very disciplined on the defensive end and finish possessions out.
"They have played three competitive games, so they are going to be our first test and we will be their fourth test. It's just a matter of going in and taking care of business and worrying about us and focusing on what we can handle."
The Aggies (2-1) come in after two consecutive victories following a loss to Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the opener.
TAMU is even more 3-point happy than Northwestern State, having taken 61 in its three games. In the loss, the Aggies made just 3-of-25, while in their blowout win of Western Michigan last game, they shot 10-of-20 from deep.
Kyndall Hunter is the main 3-point threat for the Aggies, making six triples this season and is making 40 percent of her shots from deep. Despite coming off the bench, the junior scores 10 points per game.
Five Aggies average at least eight points per game, led by Sahara Jones. The graduate student nearly averages a double-double, tallying 12.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest.
The Demons wrap up the three-game road swing in Texas with a trip to North Texas on Wednesday before coming home for one game against Southern-New Orleans on Nov. 26 at Prather Coliseum.
