Demons fall in tight match to Texas A&M-Commerce

NATCHITOCHES—In another wildly entertaining game between the two teams, Northwestern State could not hold a first half lead in a 2-1 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday afternoon at the Demon Soccer Complex.

For the third straight game, the Demons (7-6-2, 3-2-1) took an opening lead, but were unable to hold the lead, as the Lions (5-7-3, 4-1-1) found the back of the net twice in the final 10 minutes of the first half to earn the win.

"Obviously I am disappointed," head coach Ian Brophy said. "I thought the first half was going well, scoring the first goal. To allow a goal so soon after was a sucker punch. How we reacted to that, surrendering the second goal not too long after, I think we could have responded a bit better."

The loss snapped an eight-match home unbeaten streak for the Demons.

After a goal from Dawson Marrs in 35th minute, TAMUC wasted little time scoring the equalizer, doing so a little more than a minute later on a goal from Southland Conference leading scorer Kaydence Ramirez.

Savannah Powell found the back of the net three minutes later to give the visitors the lead it would not relinquish.

In the first 30 minutes of the game, neither team could garner many scoring chances.

Marrs found the back of the net for her first career goal. Emily Gundin's first shot was blocked, but Marrs gathered it and made a move past goalkeeper Veronica Pacione to score the game's first goal.

She is the 13th different Demon to find the back of the net.

But a little more than a minute later, TAMUC tied the score.

A long throw-in was headed multiple times before landing at the foot of Ramirez, who booted it bottom left to tie it up.

Powell dribbled it down the right side of the blank. Her first shot was saved by the foot of Demons goalkeeper Libe Banuelos.

But the rebound came out to Powell, who shot it bottom right corner of the goal past Banuelos to give the Lions their first lead, one that was never given up.

Kassi Schoen had an opportunity to tie the score late in the first half, but her header went just high.

The Demons had chances in the second half, but Isabella Ruggiano was stopped at the doorstep by Pacione on a 1-on-1 chance.

Sabrina Lopez also had a chance to tie the game early in the second half, but her shot was stopped by Pacione

"I thought we created a lot of really good chances," Brophy said. "Overall, we didn't do well enough capitalizing on those chances. Creating the types of chances we did, I really feel we should have had a second goal. To only get one goal after creating all those chances was pretty disappointing."

TAMUC led in shots 18-11, but each team had four shots on goal.

Isabella Ruggiano recorded a team-high three shot attempts for the Demons, while Ramirez recorded a game-high four shot attempts for the Lions.

"Soccer can be a game of moments. They capitalized on their's and we didn't on our's and that is how you end up 2-1 down."

Northwestern State hits the road for one against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday before coming back home for the final two regular season home contests against Lamar and UTRGV.
