CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—It was a sister act in Texas, as Northwestern State received goals from
Taylor Spitzer and
Jessica Spitzer in the first half to help down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-1 on Friday evening at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
The Demons (8-6-2, 4-2-1) put an end to their three-match winless streak, while putting distance between themselves and the Islanders (5-4-5, 2-2-2), who have lost two in a row after earning points in their first four Southland Conference matches.
"It was a really good night for us," head coach
Ian Brophy said. "We played really well. We were clinical with our attacking chances and the way we kept it going was really great to see."
It is the second time this season that both sisters have scored in the same match, also doing so in the 4-1 victory at McNeese.
It did not take Northwestern State long to find the back of the net to keep its streak alive of consecutive matches with a goal, now at 11.
The scoring started in the seventh minute, as
Taylor Spitzer blasted a left-footed shot near the top of the box past Zoe Theriot to put the Demons in front early.
Isabella Ruggiano was credited with the assist, her fifth and fourth during league play, the latter of which is tops in the SLC.
Brophy wanted his team to play smarter with the lead after surrendering two goals right after taking a 1-0 lead last game against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Libe Banuelos and
Jessica Spitzer were up to the task. Spitzer sent a header into the back of the net off a corner kick, which pinballed off Theriot's head.
"I thought it was a really good response after our first goal," Brophy said. "Of course they will have some chances after the goal, but we kept the way we play and I think that really helped us score that second goal."
Emma Pethel booted the corner kick to earn the assist, her first career point. She is the 19
th player to score a point this season for the Demons.
It stayed that way until halftime.
Prior to the
Jessica Spitzer goal, Banuelos made sure the Demons kept the lead, as she made a save on a header with some heat on it by Mai-Lisa Atis.
It was one of Banuelos' six saves in the game.
"It was another good night for Libe," Brophy said. "Maybe it was not as good of a night to her standards as she would have liked, but it still a really good night. She did a good job in possession and attacking the ball to keep them from getting super dangerous chances."
In the 54
th minute, the Demons registered a massive insurance goal off the foot of
Emily Senatore.
Caroline Hilliard had one of her patented long throw-ins that bounced in the box and was booted out to
Taylor Spitzer, who tapped it back to Senatore and the sophomore did the rest.
Senatore blasted one from the top of the box past Theriot to push the lead to 3-0.
"Caroline and Emily had really good games," Brophy said. "Both players locked down their matchups and Caroline did a great job attacking and getting the ball into dangerous territories and Emma was great at locking down her matchup, like I mentioned.
"It was also great to see her score her first career point. She has been so close up to this point, it is great to see her finally get rewarded."
That goal from Senatore turned out to be even larger six minutes later when Morgan Westbury scored on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Westbury, AMCC's leading scorer, found the back of the net after a foul in the box.
The Islanders attempted four more shots in a last-ditch effort to come back, but the Demons defense kept them off the board, led by Banuelos.
AMCC led in shots 11-9, but the attempts 9-4 in favor of the Islanders in the second half when the home team was frantically trying to come back.
The Demons now come back to Natchitoches for their final two home games of the season against Lamar (Oct. 25) and conference newcomer UTRGV (Oct. 27) before wrapping up the regular season with a trip to rival Stephen F. Austin.
