NEW ORLEANS – The Northwestern State women's tennis team travels to face Tulane Sunday, as the Lady Demons chase their first win of the season.
NSU (0-1) is coming off a 6-0 defeat in the season opener at TCU.
"We are wanting to compete against the best of the best and try and learn things from them," said first-year head coach Marcos Morelli.
Sofi Garcia, a sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is in her second season as a Lady Demon. She went 6-1 in doubles with partner Dorota Szczygielska, making them Second-Team All-Southland Conference in doubles at No. 3.
"If we focus on our stuff and play like we practice every day, because we practice so hard, we are ready for anything" Garcia said.
The Green Wave (1-0) won their season opener against McNeese, 5-2.
Charlotte Russell, a senior, finished the 2023 season ranked as the No. 71 doubles team in the nation alongside partner Lahari Yelamanchili.
Russell led the team in total wins, 17, for the second consecutive year.
Junior Brooke Theis finished last season with a 9-6 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 6 slot.
"We want to make a habit of competing every point and cheering on each other," said Morelli. "Build strong Lady Demon character."
Northwestern State and Tulane have met 27 times but only three wins. The last win was in 2009 in New Orleans, 4-3.
Following the match, the Lady Demons have their home opener against LSU-Alexandria on Feb. 2, where they begin a twelve-match home stand.
